Had to go out and shovel out around OAK, in the wall thimble from all this snow from this blizzard. Oak is about 36" off ground, but had a drift of about 6 feet, blowed up against back of house. Noticed flame got real lazy and sooty. Even after shoveling open, I still had to disconnect the oak from stove, because the wind was blowing snow around so much, the oak was pulling it in and clogging up the end of oak opening with snow and ice.
Yes, sometimes elements like we have today effect then burn a bit. One of my stoves was burning a little worse today then normal due to the wind.
I did not use oaks on any of our units simply because we have a passive air inlet from the roof to the furnace. This allows a change of air in the house. If we had really cold temps this would be a bad thing due to the cold air coming in. If this snow thing becomes an issue, rig up a 5 gallon can that can sit over a hole in the ground or ??? and plug a hose into it. A snow filter if you will. Or anything that can keep the snow away from the oak inlet
Very cool information on this thread!! And kudos for clearing the snow around the oak. Drifts are the norm here, I was fortunate to be here Lousyweather brought it to my attention so I could make changes before installing.
You can always just unhook the oak from your stove on the inside when the snow builds up. I'm far too lazy to go outside in a blizzard....lol.
Wasn't to bad. It was worse getting thru the 33 inches of deep snow to get to it. I shovel out from underneath the drift and it all collapsed on itself. Just shoveled the loose snow out than. It was more tired shoveling to get to it, than taking care of the drift.
Last year I had major issues with my oak and the snow. It was an early wet heavy snow. It brought the oak right down with a loud crash. almost hit the house. Had to wait till spring to get it all cleaned up. Luckily the apples, peaches and pear trees were okay.
Yes fireplace. He said he didn't shut the damper, but I don't think it would have mattered. Would have just built up on the damper instead. I don't know about a flue cap. Looks like he doesn't have one. They had 30-32" of snow in their area
