I know this is a new Poul an so not a good one but hey I got CAD. I have the opportunity to trade for this saw. Its a 4218avx or something, look at the pic I may have the last letter wrong ? I'll check . Do I need another 40cc saw...no. but I am trading, potentially, something I dont use for it. The guy said he put the new near and chair. On it this last ice storm. Has the old bar and chain and an unused "sharpening tool" and a case to go with it. Says it runs fine. Or course I would pull the muffler. I figure this is about a $50-75 saw? Just gaugeing value here for a trade. A new one can be had for $170 on amazon and a refurb for $108. I maybe try to sell it or swap it for something down the road. Any thoughts? And yes I know this is a Poulan and not a "good" saw.
For 40-50 bucks I would do it. They get ragged on a lot but the neighbor down the road has a populan pro and cuts close to 8 cords a year for his outdoor wood boiler and he swears by the thing. Could that saw really be any worse than half the Chinese saws that many people have been snagging up for 50-100 bucks?
Thats what I am thinking!! I have an earthquake!!!! I am going to trade a minnkota trolling motor. If I do the deal. I dont use it, dont have any boat that it would fit anymore, andiI have had the thing like 8years and paid $90 for it. There still only like $100 new. Mine looks like new.
As with any saw the the bar mounting studs imbedded in the plastic of the casing, be careful of over tightening the nuts. I have one sitting in a box for a project saw. That model has been fairly popular in box stores & were placed on sale for $139 - 149 every 3-4 months before they started bringing in alot of other saws without much name recognition.
I would not call Poulan a "Not good" saw . More times than not.....they kick the bucket due to the common homeowner putting in crappy gas with crappy..or barely ..if any oil in it . Not cleaning the air filter and bar oiling holes . I have found many many Wild Things that "are junk' and dont run . I bring em home...flush out the nasty fuel...replace the air filter..and clean up the bar and crud ! They start and run well 99% of the time . Proper maint. goes a long way.....plus not trying to use the saw for extreme pro use helps as well Id trade for that thing . Mess around with it for a while..then send her off ! Plus.......that one has anti-vibe ! But does it also have the funky chain adjustment on it ? Those were prone to malfunction I believe . What ever you decide...good luck ..and have some fun ! I kinda like the wildthing colors ..but boy do they vibrate the hands
I'm thinking like you fuzz. This trolling motor does me no good here. Been in a closet for the last....im 6-7 years. I have 2 boats with bow motors on them. When I sold the boat it went to the guy didnt give me what I wanted so I kept it. So I have no use for it. Was gonna sell it but the guy would only offer $40 I think. I said no. I just like saws which is why I this k I will do it. And years not sharpening a chain, little oil in fuel and no air filter cleaning does hamper asaw.
HoneyFuzz, your comment on the "Wild Things" vibrating your hands definitely would describe mine! One of the reasons it is a loaner saw - that & it's a rear handle.
Box store Poulans keep quite a few families warm in the winter. I think your thinking is right, give it a wipe down and use it for barter or a loaner down the road. Sounds like a pretty decent trade if the saw is in good shape.
I got in touch with the guy this evening. I will trade tomorrow. Again I have CAD, heck I probably will only run a few tanks of fuel through it a year. May try and trade it later for something. And I have plenty of saws this is more of an obsession thing.
Every time I look at one of those purple saws I just shake my head I mean seriously who's idea was it to take power tool that is predominantly used by men and make it purple
They should have a purple dinosaur in all their marketing material and telletubbies watching Barney cut his wood.........
I'm partial to the older Poulan's made no later than 1995-97 ish....Either the lime green with black or the more recent yellow-orange with black (former colors of Pioneer Saws Ltd from Canada & similar to Partner of Sweden before the Electrolux takeover in late '80's). Back when they were true farm/ranch (or even pro series) saws with all mag cases, chrome plated cylinder, dual thin piston rings for more HP & RPM's.My Super 380 was among the last farm/ranch models built to that tougher standard.Only sold for 2 yrs I think, more common was the previous Farm Pro 375,same displacement 62cc etc but different name plates & other parts.
I ran its big bro for a long time 4620avx and it was a good saw. All the guys that talk smack about poulan can stick it lol.... It's a good saw and I ran 5 years of two households wood through it and now my buddy has it and still uses it. They may not have balls to the walls but they are reliable and with a muff mod and sharp chain do very well. It's no pro but it's sure as heck fun...
Husqvarna's. What we know as Poulan in present day is a Swede creation, not to be mixed up with what they used to be. I give them this, you cant beat the value for a new saw. You can recoup your investment easily in half a days work.
On mine I drilled through the baffle two 1/4" holes and opened the front up about 75% more and pulled the port restrictor out and that puppy screamed! That saw out cut my buddies 450 after that....
