I cut this down while clearing an easement. No foliage and had been overtaken by vines. No sap or smell like an evergreen but very wet wood. Splits very easy and has very little odor. Not heavy at all. Any help would be appreciated. wood 2.jpg wood.jpg

Hybrid honey locust. Some kind of landscape variety that does not have the giant, man eating spikes. They sometimes can find their way into the wilds. At least that's my guess.... If the heartwood didn't have that pink tinge to it I'd say shagbark hickory....

Spot on. I'd say Shagbark Hickory but the inside would look different and smell. Certainly looking like Honey Locust of some variety.

I would say shagbark hickory. Split a couple rounds of the stuff this morning. The light weight and no smell say it isnt though.
Any twig pics Jason Bradford ?

In any event, no matter which it is it's prime firewood so get as much as you can. :salute:

Being light in weight kinda rules out shag bark hickory- right?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen shag bark but it can’t be terribly different than pignut when it comes to weight I wouldn’t think

Exact reason why I think it’s not SBH.
Maybe I’m focusing on the curls higher up that are paper thin at the edges. But I think mostly mine are dove grey.

At first glance I thought shag bark but it’s heavy, and as far as honey locust goes its the heaviest wood fresh cut I’ve ever dealt with.

ya shagbark and honey locust are suuuuuuuper heavy when fresh cut. I'm leaning towards pine. an easy way to tell shagbark hickory is to grab a piece of bark and break it. if it breaks easy it ain't shagbark hickory.
