Pressing a wheel bearing (out and then back in of course) on the rear suspension of an old audi a4. Earlier this winter when I did the other side I was looking around the shop trying to figure how I was going to get the dumb thing r&r'd. I walked out the door on the way to the house for the night and there stood a giant hydraulic press disguised as a wood splitter. And the rest is history.
That's ingenuity, Sam! I love it! A4 needs a 4 wheel alignment I guess? Good German engineering, yes? Eric Van Wickler (which is Dutch, but who's counting?!)
This one has well over 300k miles on it so I'm going to try and get by with just putting the camber adjustment bolts back in the exact same spots. I marked the heads before I removed them. If it doesn't feel right or starts to wear the tires oddly I'll get it aligned. I do like the German engineering though. I've got an '04 A8 in the garage with almost 180k on it. Heck of a family car, that one is!
As an Audi driver myself, and being 50% German, I say you did the right thing. Outsmart those cranky Germans with American ingenuity.
My last name may be some 1/3 Dutch heritage, but the the next 1/3 is German, and Volks Wagen at that- So when you see Eric VW, those 2 initials are for my last name AND my enjoyment of German engineering- even though I run Husqvarna saws! EVW
