Out back this afternoon to grab some posts for a raspberry fence, I came across this guy. I think I’ve seen one years ago as a kid. About 1.5 to 2” in diameter. On the very end of a skinny little branch on a young white oak. Leaves eaten around it.
Oak tree gall. A wasp has figured out how to make the tree do the work of protecting its egg. At another end of the work spectrum is the grass-carrying wasp that spends all day stuffign pieces of dry grass into crevices along with some food and an egg. Kinda like people in a way I guess.LOL.
I left it alone so not sure what the inside looks like. I’ve been stomping those forever. I don’t know that I’ve seen it before as new build. Certainly not at hat level. Cool! That’s pretty cool. Found this Wool Sower Gall Wool Sower Gall Wasp | NC State Extension Publications
Awwww man, I was gonna hype him up and tell him whatever you do dont open it cuz you'll get infested with aliens or some such.
Still gotta be careful not to "sit on it accidentally". https://www.barstoolsports.com/blog...k-up-his-azz-after-sitting-on-it-accidentally
