Normally I would run the other way if I encountered a gnarly tree like this but how often do you get to cut up a 90 year old apple tree?

Back in January I was cutting Asplundh wood in front and the homeowner offered up this apple blowover in his backyard to me. He said it was planted in 1936! Ill take his word, but probably is as the stump cutoff was 25". He had started to limb it with his electric chainsaw.

Some saved for smoker wood and maybe milling. IMG_5097.JPG IMG_5098.JPG IMG_5099.JPG IMG_5100.JPG IMG_5101.JPG IMG_5102.JPG IMG_5103.JPG Never have seen a tree so ravaged by sapsuckers. They must like apple! IMG_5104.JPG IMG_5111.JPG IMG_5110.JPG
Probably a face cord for the score. Not that easy to get straight rounds from an Apple tree!:hair: Not something I'd wanna do all the time. Hats off to you hoarders that cut trees like this!:tip: IMG_5105.JPG IMG_5106.JPG

That thing is crooked enough to make a hackberry tree proud!

Nice grab!! Man, that’s some good firewood! I take all the apple I can get. I’ve had good luck scrounging it. I love playing outside with my boys on a cool fall day, with a light smell of apple smoke in the air.

Indeed! My suggestion as well. Get it all and bust it into smoke chunks. Would think any restaurant with a smoker would be interested, if not some backyard users.

Mill some big thick chunks. Years ago I had a chunk in the basement. Sat on the floor for a few years. I squared it up and made a one piece jewelry box out of it. Mostly just to see what would happen,,,,warp or check. That box surprised me, never moved or checked one bit. Surprising considering how gnarly the grain is.

Thats not bad looking apple for as old as it is, only a little termite damage. I'd do and go about anywhere for apple as well. Apple is rare for me too but surprisingly I got three apple scores this year, two in one day. Two were easy enough but the third was a "100 year old apple tree". This one had fallen over and was on its gnarled side with three main trunks. Nice size but all three trunks were hollow with termites everywhere. Left most of the tree behind. Got maybe half a truckload of stuff I could use. Insult to injury the whole back yard was covered in years worth of unscooped dog poop. Tried to be careful but it got on the wood, wheelbarrow, stepped in multiple piles. Good and bad day.

Maybe the doo doo explains how the tree got that big!

Dunno if I'd brave that much dog doo for a score...well maybe black locust. I'd did put out fruit last Fall as there was a few rotten apples on the ground.

Normally I lay awake thinking I don't have enough firewood!

No! LOL!!! I usually think of one while at the score. Ms. buZZsaw is always amazed at some of the puns and jokes I come out with. I guess its a "gift" I have! :loco:

Gotta mix it up and keep it interesting.
