I had a guy text me on Tuesday that he had just bought a bow and had shot AT a doe. He said that he heard a thump, but wasn't sure if he had hit it. He found a blood trail and followed it until it got dark, but lost the trail. The next day he shot AT another doe and same results. Today he texted me that he had shot and found a button buck. Am I wrong or did this guy just kill three deer? I don't shoot unless I have a good shot that I think will be a kill. We have all had the one that got away, but this seems like this is someone who thinks that it's a Macho thing to just shoot whenever you can. (damm the torpedoes full speed ahead!) What would you say if you were me?

I'd suggest he learn how to track just for starters, from the sounds of it he has the shooting part all taken care of except maybe waiting until he is presented with a clean kill shot before letting the arrow go. The are tons out there just like him. Up this way it is called buck fever which comes in several varieties.
hunting is a skillset not a sport. nobody should ever drop the hammer unless they have a clean killing shot. therefore nobody should be out in the woods shooting at game until they are proficient enough to know when they have a clean killing shot and are able to execute that shot. if you cant do that hunt with a camera instead of a weapon
I wouldn't want to be in the same woods as he was hunting in. He'd think I was a deer and shoot to wound me! I've never been hunting, but I do stay clear of the woods during the season as a just in case sort of thing. I'm not saying I haven't killed any deer. So far I have 23 kills, all doe! I think your right, the guy did end up killing 3 deer, but not clean kills. And don't let him get a firearm of any kind! Or a chainsaw either!

He needs to become proficient before he goes shooting at deer. That's the ethical thing to do. Sounds like he needs to learn a bit. Might not be three dead deer though. They're tough animals. Flesh wounds can bleed quite a bit.
I have noticed! But so far, and I may be wrong, I haven't seen any in this particular part of the forum. I don't generally check individual profiles. I just look at the avatar and where a person is from on the left side of the post. For this part of the forum, I have several firearms that have a big voice, a pellet rifle, and a bow n arrows. With the bow, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if I were standing right in front of it. But the other firearms and pellet rifle, I never miss my target, moving or otherwise. BTW, of the 23 deer I've killed, 18 of them were from last year. All clear shots. All dressed, aged and processed by me. 90% of the meat went to those who needed it. The tenderloin, saddle rack and loin ends I kept for my efforts along with an occasional roast, heart and liver.

I've never gone hunting so I wouldn't know where to start or what to do. I also haven't been camping in years. All the animals I kill are those that come into my yard and eat the ornamental trees and shrubs I put in, the same for my flowers. The kills are quick and clean. No need to track them down after the shot since they drop over within a few feet though I can track fairly well if it's necessary. So is what I do called hunting, or just killing?

I had an uncle who had 6 kids. They were dirt poor. Lived up in the county. He fed his family with deer meat the year round. The game wardens knew it, but looked the other way.
