The new $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill included a mandate that requires all car manufacturers to include alcohol detection systems in the making of all new vehicles after 2026. Previously, several states in the United States required those guilty of driving under the influence (DUI) to install an ignition interlock device that would require them to perform a breathalyzer test before starting their car. This new system is similar, but it now applies to everyone in the country versus just the people with a drunk-driving history — and the technology is much more advanced. The way the program works is it uses infrared sensors mounted on the dashboard and door that register a driver’s breath and touch sensors that capture blood alcohol levels in the skin — KEA Technologies says that the results come back in a second. I wonder what kind of bugs will have to worked out before the new required systems are reliable? Alcohol Detection Systems Will Now Be Mandatory In All New Cars To Prevent Drunk Driving (msn.com)
Great idea Eric VW.... I'm with you 100% I wonder if your aftershave or cologne would set off the device and not allow you to start the vehicle?
I'm not so sure it mandates the requirement for all cars by that date. It seems to mandate DOT study the feasibility of existing or future systems and when could they be deployed if not by 2026. I've read ( not a lot) that the systems they put in DUI cars to try to keep them off the road haven't been terribly successful/dependable/trouble-free.
Doesn't surprise me at this point. There are a lot of things that I thought would never happen in or to our nation.....
Customer at the shop had one of those interlock systems, what a pain!! Didn't work great in winter, can't blow too hard or soft One trick we found was a cheap air mattress inflator mimicked what it needed perfectly!
No issue with me. I don't consume alcohol of any kind. Told the wife, I should buy a bar as I would never touch the stock. In 2026 I'll probably be planted anyway 4 years puts me at 76 and I never thought I'd live as long as I have. I'm a miracle of modern medicine or should I say I have good healthcare... Take your pick.
