Anyone use or have experience with the Graco Magnum X5 sprayer? The boss just picked up one for the shop, painting rails mostly. Seemed to work OK, just wondering if it's a good unit? I found a re-furb. unit , thinking I may need it at home. But only if it's a decent unit. Thoughts? Thanks, JB
I own that exact sprayer. Its not pro grade, but for a homeowner, its the cats meow. I painted my 12x16x12 mini barn twice in 2 hours with it! Try that with a brush and roller!!!! MAKE SURE you clean it out very well and it will be very well worth the investment. Failure to clean it until its spotless will just cause headaches down the road. Failure to get all the latex out before you mix oil in it (or vice versa) will result in you learning how to disassemble it completely and replace all the filters and o rings and remove the gooey messy concoction inside of it. You will then hate paint sprayers. Feel free to ask any questions.
Cool. It seems to put out a even coat on the railings we're doing, so I picked up a re-furbished unit. Should be here Wed. or so. Now I'm paint shopping to find something that will work on both metal and wood. Gonna try to paint a few things before the snow flies. Any issues with acrylics? Thanks, JB.
It'll spray acrylic just fine. Tip size make a difference. The tip number means this: Larger first digit means larger width. 2nd two digits is orifice size. A 515 Will be wider and put out more paint than a 313. Make sense?
Good to know. Lowes has a decent selection of parts, I'll pick up a few different tips once I see what it comes with. Scary to think I'm actually getting excited about painting. Thanks for the info.
One annoying thing about the cheaper airless sprayers, is they don't come with a swivel on the gun, which is a pain because your always fighting the hose. Also, the tips for the Graco "homeowner" sprayers use the RAC-X tip, which isn't interchangeable with any other sprayers... which means if you live in a small town like I do, good luck finding a tip to fit it. And whatever you do, do not clean it with lacquer thinner. I have an x7 that I loaned out, and the guy put lacquer thinner through it and melted all the seals.
It showed up today, everything new but the gun. The lock nut for the tip had been loosened with channel-locks at some point, but everything else looks good. Came with a 515 tip. I'll pick up a 313 tip to start. Hope to try it this week end.
If you have stuff to paint, let me know. I'll work out the bugs in the sprayer over the next few - whatevers- until it's too cold to paint outside this Fall. It will sit idle from then on out- until next summer. If you want to use it, let me know. PM me, not a problem.
Just a thought-... I might have a crew near Saratoga in the next month or so. If it works out, they could bring it up there, you would have to pick it up though. Just a thought.
Just knocked out 2 coats on this 8x10 shed in 1hr including back brushing once. That includes setup and cleanup too. Everyone needs a paint sprayer.
I bought a Titan pro-grade when I finished siding my house with primed Hardieboard. It took me a day to tape/mask windows doors etc, and I sprayed the whole thing in ~4hrs with cleanup. that includes ladder work 2 story 30'x40' footprint Cape They are sweet machines but 50' of hose takes nearly 3/4gal of paint to prime the pump & hose, and the cleanup really isn't terrible just hard to justify breaking it out for small jobs like doors. The reversible tip on pro-nozzles with swivel is well worth the extra few bucks. My plan was to paint the house and sell the sprayer, but it's still in the garage after 6yrs I've contemplated breaking it out to spray deck sealer but don't want to deal with oil based cleanup - latex cleanup is easier than most would expect
Necrobump I'm helping a buddy paint his entire interior. 1250sq ft home. Ceilings done in 1 hour each coat. All doors and trim done in .75 hour each coat. Trim paint has to cure before I can tape it off so no time on the walls yet. Reloading room painted floor to ceiling all 1 color in 10 minutes. Luckily we are replacing carpet as well so no covering floors other than his wood in the kitchen. I'd be 30 hours into this without the sprayer. Instead, 3.5 hours and it looks much better than a brush and roll job. Anyone painting ceilings owes it to themselves to get or rent a sprayer.
I bought an X7 when I painted my house back in 2008. I used it for that job and loaned it out to a bunch of people. I got it back this year from a friend and it no longer working. Everyone who used it said it worked good. It may be an easy fix but I have a feeling the last person didn't clean the pump right.
Wow, this is a timely thread. I've got a big indoor job coming up and not a lot of time to get it done. My mother, bless her heart, had rather strange taste in paint colors (pink on the walls AND ceiling ?!?!?! ) and I have to first shoot Kilz Premium and then topcoat. This is a rental property so the whole interior is getting done in one neutral color. Here's the sprayer I bought a few days ago....can't wait for that Amazon box to show up!
You will never want to roll an interior again golf66 ! You can easily lay down more than 10 gallons per hour. Its the prep time that is time consuming. BUY A GOOD RESPIRATOR. They can be had for around $50 or less. You will be sick for a week or more if you don't. Eye protection is very nice to have too when doing ceilings.
