Local guy to my area, but a good reminder of taking a few seconds to scan the trees being dropped and maybe have a spotter. Officials identify man killed after logging accident in Lysander
This is unfortunate to say the least. It is a good reminder though to simply look up. It's easy to get focused on what needs to be done to the tree at base height without looking over the top of the tree. I've seen guys do it a lot. I've caught myself doing it once or twice. That's why I agree with Adam it's always best to have a buddy along when cutting in the woods.
Obviously, I can't like this. But I do like that you passed this along as a reminder to do it with helper/spotter. Everyone, be careful out there.
I am almost always by myself gathering wood. BUT... I only cut what is already down. Can never tell....
Sadly, a guy here in Maine had a tree he was cutting fall on him last Saturday... Maine man dies in tree-cutting accident By CBS 13 Posted May 01, 2016, at 4:49 p.m. PERU, Maine — Stephen Fuller, 63, died in a tree-cutting accident Saturday morning at his home on Greenwoods Road, authorities said. Fuller was cutting a tree on his property when the tree fell on top of him. He was wearing appropriate safety equipment when the accident occurred, authorities said. He was found on the property by a family member.
Dropped one Saturday myself. Ended up going just where it wanted to go and not even close where I wanted it to go! 99lbs was there for the failure and looks like I'll be buying a little chicken wire for the neighbors.
I do not like to fell trees. This was was such a leaner that there was no way I would take a pic and post it here!!
A sobering reminder to keep safety in mind at all times, to look the tree over up down and sideways before felling, and to if possible have an extra set of eyes with you. I have felled my share of trees, none bigger than 24" diameter I think, but I never cease to be scared when that tree starts to go and makes that huge crash when it hits the ground.
Danger takes many forms when it comes to cutting wood. I posted in this forum a couple days ago about getting out for the 1st time. A tree service had dropped the wood I was cutting, but if you look at the photos, you can see it was on a pretty good hill running down to the lake. Another tree service with a crane was working about 500 yards farther down the way. The next day I was cutting and heard another saw from down the way. A couple of young guys were working on their logs from the crane job. About 30 minutes go by and I hear a large splash behind me! I turn around and look and immediately I feared the worse. These fellas were cutting on that hill and had not blocked the logs from the downhill side. Thankfully they had been cutting from the up hill side, or that 30"diameter, 25 foot long log would of rolled right over the top of them. I walked over to make sure no one was hurt, and then for the next hour while I was cutting, I watched them try to fish that log out of the lake with a rope and a 4 wheeler. I don't think they really appreciated just how close they came to making the evening news!
