Old habits die hard here. FBM find. Honey locust. Easy and safe (save for those nasty thorns) score. Not exactly what I wanted at this time and a rare treat for me. Well picked over by other hoarders. Some tops and the two big trunks left. One with the huge thorns. Third thorny one I've seen in my area and the first time I'll cut one. Wish me luck as I'll hit it tomorrow. IMG_7098.JPG IMG_7099.JPG IMG_7100.JPG IMG_7101.JPG IMG_7102.JPG IMG_7103.JPG IMG_7104.JPG And I'll bet everyone thought this was my April fool's joke.:D

Hopefully I wont get nailed. I recognized it as HL from the posting and was surprised to see the one with the thorns when I checked it out this afternoon.

My childhood home parents had one on bottom of an arced downhill driveway. The thorns that blew off or dropped would pop tires every few years.

    Yeah, nah.
Be careful with all the equipment, from saws to vehicle to person.

Are you kidding me, looks like it's still there 50 years later? Or is this a new tree her and husband planted in the mid 90's? (sad to see this home in poor shape. Also those Juniper bushes against the house are from 1972 too, wild!)

That looks like a mess to deal with but there is some great firewood there.
Honey locust mills into absolutely beautiful material for woodworking and has a color exactly like honey if finished clear.

Wow, it does look like a mess but there sure is lots of wood there. Work safe Brad, what are the odds you can get through it all w/o a prick or 2?

Its been picked over good. The two big trunks didnt sway me. It sections up nicely with the Isocore.

I thought of trying to save the one medium log for milling.

Nope. Looks like I can leave nuggets behind too.

Not sure what other trees are coming down as he said they are bringing in a crane. Had a good chat with tree guy on FB last night. He does a lot of work in the area so I made another connection.

Might want to drive a large screw eye in the end of that log and drag it around the block a few times,,,,,,,just don’t drive the same path twice :)

I’d bring a broom and shovel. Keep those thorns neatly away from where you’re working.

If you do get a thorn, make sure to get it out ASAP as they have a toxin called "toxalbumins" and can wreak all kinds of havoc if not gotten out quickly...even a good scratch can get infected and be painful.
This score seems a little bit like the firewood hoarders version of paying extra to go diving and do the "swim with sharks" option!

He's going to have to look before every step. They went through all my shoe soles when mowing as a kid.

Arrived today and the tops had been taken (pic #6 of the OP) as well as some of the big logs. Still enough to fill the PU twice.
No problems with the thorns as I was very careful working that one log with them. IMG_7105.JPG IMG_7107.JPG IMG_7108.JPG IMG_7109.JPG Biggest I've ever cut. Don't mind the Isocore handle in the way. IMG_7115.JPG First load at storage. IMG_7110.JPG Second load. IMG_7116.JPG IMG_7117.JPG HL Sections up nicely with the Isocore. Chunks are still heavy. IMG_7114.JPG Saved this burl to sell to my lathe guy. Anyone have an idea of what its worth? IMG_7111.JPG IMG_7112.JPG IMG_7113.JPG Solid cord for the score. Five silver maples to come down yet in a couple weeks so I'll probably be back.
