A smorgasboard of wood w/ pictures of my processing stacks.

My mother lost a tree in the latest storm that came through. We had a tree service drop it as it was leaning against the house. Luckily it did little damage to the house and amazingly the branches missed three windows on the side of house it hit. They dropped it and I took care of limbing and bucking it up.Yesterday morning and this morning I took care of it for her.

It's a Linden (Basswood) about 25 feet tall. Not great wood, I know but it will work for shoulder wood next year. As I took all the limbs to the tree dump I not only spotted the Ash I posted about earlier, but Mulberry, Silver Maple and Birch. I also had to clear out a very tall Lillac at her house. I kept some of the 2"-3" stuff to see what it will burn like. Very dense wood. Reminds me of the Honeysuckle I gathered last year.

The trailer is the FIL's. He's short on room at his house so he let's me use it when ever I want as long as I store it for him at our place. Heck of a deal.

 

Basswood is great stuff for carvers. Alot of duck decoys are carved from it.

 

Got it unloaded so I thought I'd take a few pics of my processing site. My yard is too small so I use another lot in town to process the wood at.



The rounds and logs I haven't bucked down are almost all Ash. The partial stack is Elm, Ash, Maple mix I've split and stacked.





The stacks are mostly Ash, Elm and some Silver Maple. Not quite a cord among the three stacks.




From left to right in the front. Spruce, Oak, Mulberry some Birch and Lillac. The stack in back is Elm.




The Linden I bucked today. That stuff splits easy!

Thanks guys. In that center picture that shows the three completed stacks, I had the left two running three pallets deep (12' or so) but I found out they weren't getting enough wind or sun so I moved last 4' onto a rack at my house for this winter's burn. I trimmed a bunch of branches of the surrounding trees to get the area more light and wind too.

I'm amazed how quickly the Spruce dried out. It was from a couple live trees at my mother's house. The just seeped water and were relatively heavy in August when we brought them down. Now they are incredibly light.

 

Yes I've got to admit he's pretty darn good to me, but he knows I'm there for him whenever he needs a hand. Helped him shingle his garage roof and put up an addition to it not to long ago. Always tries to pay me but I refuse. After all he gave me the best present ever, his daughter.....now where is that little lady so I can let her read this?

 

Any guesses as to how much wood I have? I know I've got about a cord stacked in those three face chords.

In one of the pictures it looks like the bottom half of a torso on top of the pile........

 

I was wondering if anyone saw that. I told my wife we should use it for Halloween somehow.

The "Upper Torso-less Woodsman"? Cut in half in the prime of life, he now haunts the kids by throwing acorns at them?
