Partner (Lefty) wanted to try and get ahead on the sell pile and found this guy with a processor. About 3 hours, but we were not as ready as we should have been. Had to do some cutting and pulling off some that were to big, 18" chain and small opening. Just may have him back later in the year.
$200 for a 4 hour minimum. $50 per hour after. Said he could do 1.5-2 cords an hour if we can keep him fed. He was there for about 3.5 hours and guessing around 4 cords split. We were not staged well and had too much that needed cut or was just a little big to fit. We may use him again when we are staged better. I've been having motivation issues the past couple of years and just not getting out logging like I should. Maybe Sunday was what I needed to get it in gear and get some work done, but 50-60+ hour weeks really take it out of me.
Locust, ash, oak (white and red), maple, 1 cedar log and just firewood. We try to keep all softwood out of the sell pile.
Nice looking setup Stephiedoll , looks like you got a decent amount done. I here you on the long work weeks though. That does wear a body down. What's the International tractor in the background. 706?
looks like black locust from what ive seen on here Sean Easterly. Been mentioned a lot lately on here! How goes the wood hoard?
I think I have one more Elm to cut down and then I will call it a season. We almost hit 80 degrees yesterday and it doesn't feel right cutting and splitting in the heat! I enjoy it more when it is <30 degrees! Hoarding is now my official winter hobby. That being said I came into a score of what my neighbor told me was Ash on Sunday. He had a tree fall and it left a hanging widow maker and a nice trunk to cut up. The neighbor is ~78 years old and he helped me process it!! When I say process, I really mean half processed. I tried to split it Sunday with no luck. I decided I was likely just too tired and would come back Monday. I went last night to split it and my splitting maul just kept getting stuck in the wood. I was able to split maybe five pieces. The pieces I could split just kind of splintered off...my neighbor suggested letting it dry in the rounds (which I don't really want to do). Here is a picture: Do you all think it is ash? (Disclaimer: there is some hedge in there too that I "had" to cut down to have better access to the "ash" ) I also cleaned up a rotting tree for him...I got no wood out of it...it was all just rotten inside. Here are pics of that as well!
im not a big fan of making firewood in the heat, although hoarding is a year round venture Sean Easterly when you're a scrounger like myself. The wood you describe doesnt sound like ash. Ash will split pretty easy and straight. If its dead (i split some dead last week) it may be tougher, but will still be straight for the most part, unless knotty and gnarly. Not sure whats in the pics. Making firewood is my cold weather "hobby" as well. Starting to warm up here as well and idontlike it. Of course the first sweatshirt day in the Fall ill sat the same!
Went back out this afternoon for a few hours. Lefty was out but got the stuff cut to length that was not processed last Sunday. Need to work on my chain sharpening as I only go about 2/3 tank of mix before I needed to sharpen it again. Doesn't help the wood was dirty and I found some steel cable a couple of times.
Dirt is one thing, cable is h3!! on chains. Looks like ya did good though Stephiedoll . Oh & BTW, I really wanna buy a 656 IH from somebody named Lefty. That would be a great piece of equipment lore.
