Looks more like a pile of bucked up sycamore instead of a protected tree.

The bandit apparently couldn't carry out more than a few pieces.
Well, we've mostly all heard stories about protection.... Sometimes it works; sometimes not.
The mafia wasn't paid their protection money, and took it out on the poor tree.
It may be that Dex or MM found a new toy and couldn't resist..
