Was at one of the fancy pants grocery stores my daughter likes to frequent, and I saw they had some kiln dried wood bundles for sale... Check out where it came from... (upper left hand corner of the label) WTF!!! Shipping must have been cheap, but I think I could beat that price ($8.99) and got it to them a little bit faster...
Strange days we’re living in when you can buy overpriced Latvian firewood at a yuppy store in Alabama imported by a New Jersey company…. And there’s a profit to be made there.
Sorry guys, that wood started as a shipping crate or the like and carried something on a ship to the USA. Then company that got that product and had tons of shipping packaging left over.. someone got idea taking waste repackage it and sell it Labeling is a govt requirement
Should have seen the shock on my face when I learned it was cheaper to buy granite from China than right here in the states. And substantially so. Most of the granite you see in large buildings down to the steps on your house now comes from China. That’s some shipping weight.
Ive seen "factory made" bundles from Canada, but that far? if it wasn't heat treated, I doubt they'd let it in. Could you ID any of the species?
I couldn't ID the wood, as it was all barkless, though it did look like some still had a thin tan inner papery layer on some pieces. The splits looked they came from smaller trees that were originally 8-10 inches in diameter cut four ways, and were about as heavy as dry tulip poplar. Fast burning fire pit/fireplace kind of stuff. It was light in color and not a dense wood at all. Hmm.. Doing a search comes up with some interesting stuff... Buy Kiln-Dried Firewood Online, Latvia | Export to UK, Sweden, Germany & More is a site claiming to be the largest firewood company in Latvia... "We have proven to be a reliable partner to small and large companies in USA, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Holland, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and we keep exploring new markets." They mention kiln drying their wood. Another one is https://www.rawoodexport.lv/ that has some cool looking pictures of the wood processing facility, and exports to quite a few countries... They mention selling alder, ash, birch and oak, in bags, bundles, crates and as pellets and charcoal. Who would think that Latvia would be dominating the EU firewood markets? Maybe that's where everyone's friend EODDiver moved to! (I wonder if the people over there are still trying to figure out what "Benjamins" means...)
