The local dump had a gem sitting there this morning, so I went and snagged some of it. The trailer pic is after I tossed a couple big rounds off and what is there is about half of what is at the dump. If time (and my back) permits, I may go back for more. Man, that stuff was HEAVY! Also, I got the second Holz Hausen started.
BL? That's a big one, and fresh it's gonna be super-heavy. Looks like you taught the boy well...he knows what a good score is!
That's a good question. I found maple leaves with it, so I'm thinking its Maple? I would love it if it were BL. It was certainly heavy enough. One thing that's interesting is that the heart wood turns dark like Walnut. As an added note. I was sweating profusely doing this job. I grabbed three bottles of water before we left and I am so glad I did. I could have used more. We all need to remember to stay hydrated. Especially when our cutting partner is a 5 year old.
I hope I'm wrong but it looks like a softer hardwood to me, cottonwoodish. I'd like to see a close up of the end grain, it looks "fuzzy" from what I can see which you don't get with hardwoods like oak/black locust etc.
Nice looking score, not sure what it is. Bring it over, if the old lady drops it on her foot its locust! She's kind of like a ground hog in determining such things.
Looks real close to cottonwood to me too. Wet & heavy this time of the year, but split , it dries fast .
Nice score. Pretty soon, your helper will be throwing pieces that size around like popcorn. Then you can just "supervise". LOL
That has certainly crossed my mind. I didn't think cottonwood because the bark didn't seem to have such deep grooves in it, but the wood is "fuzzy". It had a lot of maple leaves on a smaller branch with it, so I was thinking big leaf maple. That's the leaves that were with it. I know its not BL. That would be crazy. I guess if it is cottonwood then I will just have to use it anyway. Hopefully I can split it. I will post some pics right after I give my son some chicken nuggets.
