My 10yo daughter is playing at the beach, stacking “firewood” while setting up a “crab restaurant” with discarded shells. As she grabs a piece that’s too short to stack, I tell her that’s called a shortie or an ugly. She throws it over her shoulder dismissively. I nod proudly. A few minutes later she’s sprinkling white sand over the stack. “Guess what I’m doing?” she asks. “Seasoning the wood!” I laugh, but then I confirm that she knows what it actually means. (She does…phew!)
The things kids say....tells us how we've done, and reveals their sense of humor. Thats a thread of its own though.
