So I'm sitting on my front porch a few minutes ago when I heard the unmistakable sound of Pratt Whitney radial engines coming my way. A twin tailed B-25 in natural aluminum finish flew ovey my house at about 2500 feet. He turned slightly south and followed the Ohio River until he was out of sight. What a cool sight to see. I can't imagine the sound 100 of these approaching low for a bombing run would sound.
I miss those sights, I grew up on Long Island between Republic and Grumman, airplanes flying over all the time.......
That's the bird! It's the first one I've seen since about 1980. I took a ride in a B-17G a couple years ago. That cost me as much as a good used saw, but no regrets. I can't imagine being in a 17 with another plane firing 20mm rounds at you. The skin on that 17 was thin enough to push your thumb through. Those guys truley the greatest generation.
Mmmmm. I do like me a Mitchell. I know they are antiquated but I sure wish we still built a radial now and then..... Turbines have no soul!
Gorgeous birds! They just had a big get together of the Mitchells in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Doolittle's raid.
