I just spotted a fisher stove that will be coming up on an auction. Pictures are not great but looks to be in really good shape. Not sure what model either. I’m thinking about taking a run at it for a “someday when I get a shop built” stove. Or maybe sell it to my boss to replace the barrel stove at my work shop. It has an 8” outlet and comes with some 8” pipe and pieces. The stove currently in use at work is plumbed with 6”. Is it possible or reasonable to reduce the 8” down to 6” to use what is already in place at work? I know there’s no way the boss would go for redoing the whole stove pipe system.
Single door or double door? Single door, no problem they were designed for 6”. Double doors, should be fine just don’t burn with the doors open. Done both over the years plenty with family, friends and neighbors. Our stove was a Papa that had an 8" collar necked down to 6" for the 29 years we used it. Owl
It is a double door. I don’t know much about these stoves other than they look good and are apparently somewhat sought after. I’m guessing they were well designed and quality built pre EPA stoves. Any idea what it might be worth?
He is kinda the resident fisher guru isn’t he? I knew there was someone here that was knowledgeable about them. Hopefully WeldrDave will chime in and give me some insight
I’m in the heart of Fisher country. Most go 200 - 400. Once in a while an exception will go for 600ish. Don’t go crazy. Some people think they’re pound for pound worth gold. Without a picture or two there’s no guessing how much what you are looking at might be worth. Owl
You should be fine. I just installed a Craft 4830 in my basement fireplace. The stove had a rectangle shaped exhaust hole. It was at least 10" x 16". I fabbed and welded up a transition piece that reduced the exhaust to a 6" pipe so I could connect to a 6" chimney liner. It drafts and burns fine. No issues at all. Your 8" to 6" transition should be ok.
That’s a granny. Keep the doors closed and a 6" pipe should work without any trouble or worry. Remember on Fishers the pipe at the collar rides over the top not into the collar. So get the right female to female reducer then the rest of the pipe will plumb up the right way. Looks in good shape maybe 300-400 in our local market, auctions can be fun though. If you get it it will be the last heater you’ll need unless someone does something completely stupid. Owl
Sorry, late to the program, I was away for a bit. There was a few places on the web that you could get a pipe reducer from 8" to 6" A local sheet metal shop could make one up for you, I don't know the cost but there was a guy on Ebay that sold them last year and I believe it was a bit over $100.00. All the doulbe door Fishers had 8" and the Papa Bear single door Fishers. To answer the question of reduction, yes, you won't have an issue as long as you keep a nice clean flow and not to many bends. Also, I currently run a Grandma and is piped for 8" but because I'm not having it cranking at full BTU's, 6" would be fine. I have some pictures somewhere of the reducer and I'll post them when I find them.
Here's a Stainless one I just found, very reasonable. 6” x 8” Stainless Steel Stove Pipe Reducer/increaser 8" to 6" 6" to 8" | eBay
Rural King carries the single wall reducer. I think they are having their half price sale right now. I picked one up for $8 if I remember correctly. I bought a ton of stove pipe fittings so don't remember all the prices.
