The Mackinaw bridge open to traffic 11/1/1957. I have crossed this bridge many times and always enjoy it. During hot summers we always opened windows and turned off the air as the air is wonderfully cool. Of course in winter... One time I was crossing with a truck when traffic was stopped. I got out of the truck and walked around and was blessed as a huge ore ship crossed right under me. Yes, you can see down below when out in the middle. That thing really shakes too! Building the bridge was a huge project.
I love driving across, especially crossing to get to the good side. I almost always roll the windows down.
The bridge sure eliminated times for all the apple knockers during deer season! No more waiting in line for car ferrys.
