I have a spare AR lower, so I'm thinking of the 6 x 45 for an upper. I know I have to load for it, but the Partition and Accubond bullets in 85/90 gr. weights would work for deer around here. I have no interest in the .300 ACC. Any ideas on a practical upper? I'm open to suggestion. Thanks, JB
Palmetto State Armory and DS Arms have always treated me well some people complain about slow shipping but I subscribe to the good, fast and cheap pick any two. I would buy components and build it the way you want. ALG makes some nice affordable free float tubes or go geiselee and get their reaction rod never used on but a lot of people's really brag on them. I've not shot enough different barrels to say Kreiger/LaRue/Daniel defence is better than green mountain I would get a mid range barrel and spend extra on optics and mount. I've really considered a 6.8 SPC II, 6.5 Grendel but always come back to if I'm shooting (hunting) past 200 yards I'm going to pick a more suitable rifle for that job! If I'm in the brush I just may build a 300 blackout pistol with a shockwave or sigbrace.
What's practical!?!?! The 6mm is a good bullet. Depends on what you want out of it. I think it'd do dandy on Deere out to 300 without checking ballistic tables. I'd go 18 inches, if it's just a hunting barrel any brand will likely do...An inch moa is what most hunting rifles/hunters can do on a good day.
Sorry for the delay, house full of Montanawegians for the last few days. Thought about the 6.8, but not certain I want to dedicate something I won't use that much. Keeping with the 6mm, nothing changes. Very easy to load for also. As the lower is a spare at this point, I have time to investigate different uppers. .450 Bushmaster?? I do have a hankerin' to smack some hogs again. Who knows?
Yeah, my bad- should be the .300 AAC/ Blackout. If the Hearing Protection Act gets passed I'll reconsider it. The 6 x 45 is my current choice, with the 85gr. limitation on bullet weight. Much more and they won't fit the magazines without a deep seating depth. Probably won't do much for accuracy with that much jump. I am looking into the 6.5 Grendel, I didn't realize the available factory ammo for it. Maybe the .50 Beowulf, it's got the shock value going for it. Heck, Beowulf and Grendel had a few matches in the past, let's see how they fare today? Any others?
The 6x45 has a lot going for it. That said, I'd think twice, maybe more before doing it. A few years back I decided to try 6.8 SPC. I think the round made sense and the upper was fine. No problems. But, I realized that it looked an awful lot like a 5.56. Unless I was going to completely convert to 6.8, I realized that somehow, someday, I'd inadvertently get a 6.8 firmly jammed into the chamber of my 5.56 rifle and that was going to happen at the exact moment when I needed to shoot the boogie man. I know I'm the only person in the world stupid enough to make that mistake, but when it comes to weapons that might be used on living targets, I prefer to minimize the opportunities for mistakes. It's the same reason my defense shotguns, my SxS shotgun and my hunting rifles all have tang safeties- I don't really want to think about which gun is in my hand at the time. I want the same motion, every weapon, every time. (An AR has a pistol grip so it is sufficiently obvious to me that it is a different manual of arms.)
