Santa brought me a 562XP for Christmas. I’ve always run Stihl chainsaws, but Santa decided I needed a change so he got me a 562XP.

Being an inquisitive person I decided to take the side cover off yesterday after reading a post on here about the different clutches that chainsaws come with.

When I took the side cover off I did have to wiggle it some but didn’t think anything of it. Well, I guess I made the dreaded mistake of taking it off while the chain brake was engaged. Watched a couple YouTube videos but it looks like their covers are different than mine. Anbody have any suggestions on how to disengage it ?

I’ll have to inform Santa that this is a Stihl only house going forward…..:p

Line up the bar stud holes trying to put it in place, and push the top right corner of the clutch cover in while you pull back on the brake handle. You will be able to get the brake mechanism to engage just enough so that you can take the brake off

Congrats on the new saw!! Interested to hear how you like it. First time I ran one of those I was amazed at how smooth it cut.

Thanks. I have to go feed the cows so I think that’s an excuse to go cut wood for a little bit after I’m done with that. :D

My biggest saw now is a 18 year old 290, so I’m sure this will be night and day difference.

For hot start, don't use the choke. Using the switch to turn the choke on, then off places the saw on "fast idle" setting (I do this for my 3 series saws). Use that to restart after the saw has been run and warm. Then touching the throttle will take the system off fast idle to normal idle. And don't use decomp button. This will save you some headaches.

Thanks for the video. I read that in the manual yesterday after reading about it here. There’s also a nifty little diagram on the saw too that I noticed.

I have no clue on how to adjust a carburetor so this saw is perfect for someone like me. Always take my stuff to a friend who knows small engines in and out.

Man, can that thing cut. No real bogging down in anything I was cutting. Most stuff I’m cutting is <16”. It currently has a 20” bar with what I’m assuming is X-Cut chain, there’s a gold link. I probably cut for 15 minutes or so and made a decent dent in my log pile.

Ordering a 24” bar to tackle the red oak trunk blew over in the pics. The tree itself if probably 4’ DBH. That will be fun….

Took it a few pulls to get it started on both a warm and hot start. My Stihl’s normally kick over after four or so pulls, and then one pull on mid-choke and they are off. This was probably six or so. I’d assume as time goes on that should get better.

Attached a few pics of todays adventure.

Sweet. I’ve heard good things on the XCut chain. I’ve hoarded some Oregon LGX/EXL and a couple loops of Stihl. Probably a lifetime worth, lol, so I may never get to try it out.

Running those saws at GTG’s, most times they’d fire 1st or 2nd pull. But like I said, never owed one. After warm up, my 3series start with 1-2. Cold start is usually 5-6. They are carb saws.

In my earlier post I should have said cold start, and not hot start.

I too was also expecting the saw the to kick over after a couple pulls. Running ethanol free gas mixed with Red Armor at a little under 50:1. I even double checked I did the correct procedure when cold starting it.

I’ll see if it does better next time.

You'll get to know it more with time. My Husky leaf blower with primer bulb I can get to start in 2-3 pulls pretty consistently after sitting for a while. One on full choke, then 1-2 on fast idle and it takes off.

lmao on the cow patty pic! :faint:  :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

I still have to be conscious of what saw I’m trying to start, the procedure is definitely different from the 562 and all the rest. My most frequent frustration is when I run it awhile and then shut it off for awhile either to load rounds, do some splitting or just take a break. Then try to restart it when it’s not really a cold start but not a hot start either, ( but closer to cold). Not much of an issue anymore if I think about what I’m doing with which saw

Think I got my starting “issue” figured out. As we saw in the IT world, it was a layer 8 issue ( end user ).

When the choke is on full, I only pulled it one time. I realized I need to pull it until it cranks over ( like my Stihl’s ) and then take the choke off and give one more pull.

No issues with starting it warm this time either.

Thanks to everyone for their help !!!!

Todays damage, waiting for the boss to help me split. :saw:
