.50 vs. .058 bar/chain gauge...any reason to like one vs. other?

    Good morning all,

So it seems like I fixed my bar problem. But figured I should have a backup bar, just in case Was looking at those Sugihara bars for a while now, as they pop up a lot in the chainsaw pics thread and they look cool.

When trying to match up my saw to the right bar, I get either a .050 or a .058 option. Both would work. I'm currently running the .050, and have one chain left for it. I'm thinking just buy the same bar, have the same chains for simplicity. But...also thought I'd ask people on this forum if there's maybe a reason for a switch.

    Cheers!

.058 stronger links perhaps a bit less stretch in tough conditions cuts a bit wider kerf also. can not mix them o50 in a 058 bar and drive sprocket would be slapping all over the place and the .058 should not even fit in a .050 set up if it does things are worn out.

Right, can't put .050 chain in .058 bar, and vice versa. That, I figured.

More, along the lines of the "less stretch" and "wider kerf" comments you make. Not sure if that's worth it, or is it? Compared to having two same size bars, one as a backup, so I can swap chains and only have one of something.

Think that's how I'm gonna go. Especially sicne down the road, I'll be getting a bigger saw, like a 572xp or a ms462, which bring in more bar and chain sizes.

I'd go for the simplicity of just .050. And availability - around here, be hard to find .058 locally.

Yes, if you have .050 already, just run that, especially if you are only running a 20" bar. I run .050 on 25" bar, does fine. 28" runs .063.

I run .050" on everything through 36" except naturally. 404". Strength wise, kerf wise ect. you can't tell any difference at all. Some say it oil's better......better put your boots on. A worn .050" good quality bar can be cleaned up to run .058". Nothing good will come from having both sizes on hand. Especially if you make/repair your own loops. Like a box of mixed 5/16" and m8 nuts, nothing but aggravation.

Yep bad enough when you have 1/2 doz or more length chains hanging on the wall of the same type. I have a couple 28 or so inch bars one is wide the other narrow couple links différance between them.

I run .058 for more oil with my fixed oiler. I find it works well

I run .050 all the way up to 36" without issue. Easily available around here. I'd say pick a size & keep it uniform. I've got a 100ish chains around here & it's hard enough to keep track of length, let alone gauge. I do have a .404 28" setup for my 660, but that difference can be seen from a mile lol.

Just pick one and go with it. Your average firewood hoarder probably would never know a difference in 50-58. Get what’s readily available in your area.

Now when the bar gets looong, 36” and up I run .063.

I agree with the K.I.S.S. Principle,

Everything of the same pitch, runs the same gauge

    The .404 is all .063, with 36", 44" 60" and 72" Bars

    The 3/8 is all .050, with 20", 24" and 28" Bars

    The .325 is all .050 with 13", 16", 18" and 20" bars

The 3/8 20", I wouldn't even have, except the 372XP, I recently bought came from a dealer in Wisconsin, and came with the 20".
It was what he had, and those 372XP's are gettin scarce, so I took what I could get. but I have a couple of 24", and a 28" bars that fit both the 266XP, and the 372XP, so I don't expect the 20" D009 mount to get very much use

I like the others would just run all .050 chain. Don't run oddball sizes. If you go somewhere and forget a spare chai. Or rock a chain and need to buy one, it will be easier at least around here to find 050
