What did Stihl change on the 460 to make the 461? I figured 440 went to 441 and 660 went to 661 and both ended up as Mtronics. But I guess this one wasn't the case. I see Randy ported one got some good gains. Just curious. Thanks.
Its a quad port cylinder with a stuffer. Its a single barrel traditional carb. Just more efficient design. 661 is the same design with mtronic.
Like Mike said, the engine is different, but still not a Strato design and no m-tronic. It does resemble a 460 in appearance however. Unlike the 440 to 441 change, which the 441 is a totally new machine that does not share much other than the color scheme with the 440.
Stuffer? I've been reading about quads advantages...its been Interesting. Thanks for all the explanations... Just kinda of prefer the 460 platform vs. the 660 platform. And then to see the extra juice that the MasterMind squeezed out of it. Really is a eye opener... But was kinda of wanting to try that Mtronic format, may have to check out the 441CM... Cause Christmas is coming rapidly...
Me I like the 461 for the torque. A lot of stihl people don't like the springs since it's like a husky. My BIL works for Asplundh and said the 441 was the best husky/stihl he's ever used. That said he has a 461 for the side work he does.
I really want to see a 441CM dyno chart from Chad....... The "stuffer" is not really the same thing you see on like the 572XP you have, it's kind of a pedestal located to direct fuel/oil upwards to the underside of the piston and wrist pin bearing. Randy has a pic I'm sure. It did not seem to have an effect on power if I remember correctly. I like the 460/461 saws. They are brutes and the power to weight ratio is better, especially stock. Actually the 441 and 460 weigh nearly the same. If I was picking a saw to build for g2gs or to race, the 461 would be it. But I maintain that the 441 is a far better worksaw. If the AV and Mtronic don't sell you, then the air filtration should. The 441 has a centrifugal precleaning system that is identical to Husqvarna's Air Injection setup. (And that the 460/461 lacks) Tank after tank without having to clean the filter, which is something my 460s would not do, at least not well.
I can see it helping boost case compression (IDK how different the volume is from the 460 with the long transfers the 461 has) but no way would it have nearly the same effect as the big stuffers Husky has been using on the 550/562.
It has more volume. I don't know by how much and don't really know how to measure it the way it's laid out.
Even though the 461 isn't Mtronic now? I see them going that route into the short future? If and when they do? My 460 may go down the road. Im sold on the Mtronic technology. . MS 261C-M will be here today.. I would like to have all but one of the Mtronic saws (the 241C-M is the only one I don't see me ever having the need for). I like big saws So the 661 is a purchase I see in the foreseeable future! ! MS 261C-M MS 362C-M MS 441C-M MS 461C-M (hopefully) MS 661C-M (soon) That would put a smile on my face.. I don't need them all, but I sure want them
I think the next revamp of the 461 is probably going to be FI like the cut off saw. It seems to work great in them but you have to have a primer bulb to get it started.
I would think that stuffer was designed to push all the fuel/air out under the piston and through the lower transfers.
Stihl claims its to throw cooler fuel on the wrisring pin area to aid in heat reduction due to what Stihl calls delayed stratified scavening technology that stuffs hot exhaust partially back in transfers????
I agree. The only thing in the 461 that could stuff exhaust is the huge baffle across the exhaust port in the muffler thats on a 45° angle. I drilled that sucker out and chunked it, trimmed h limit on carb, and advanced timing as soon as I got it home
