I inquired about an ad with oak 6x6 by 30 inches long. At $175 for 125 cubic feet, does this seem good? Remember Im in WA so hardwoods can be more coveted but this isn't your average splits. Dimensional, looks like pallet or bindings for heavy loads so nails exist not that they bother me but strictly burned indoor in my eyes.
Not too bad for just shy of a cord, although you'll need to cut 'em in 1/2 for the stove. The nails would only be a problem if the chain hits 'em. I don't like nails in the ashes, but that's me.
Normally i have found great supplies of oak skids just double the size of a pallet and 4 times as heavy. Good supply of wood there, probably a good day or two worth of oak for me in just one stringer which is about 8-9 feet. Not always there in supply but I don't have the trailer at this time so Im making do when I find one by getting it on the top of my car. Then i just cut the slats with chainsaw and cut 12-16 inch blocks with chop. Got my fair share of usable oak but it does differ in MC so Im careful about making sure that is below 20 now and can split to let the summer take hold. This process is free to me in terms of labor. But hard to pass up a good oak deal.
He says a partial delivery is fine im ok to meet halfway. Since this wood doesnt need too much processing im not worried so much about it. So maybe try one 40 piece load and then maybe not buy any more for awhile.
Seems like you've been scoring a lot for free, and the Yankee in me says don't pay if you can keep scoring for free. Just My $.02. (Cause I'm cheap and that's all I'll give up! )
You know I might keep going with my freebies as I do get them often enough. At least when I try to make the score I do. Others are plentiful but smaller. At least your two cents might keep my wallet 35 bucks richer.
X2, if you got freebies coming in, eventually you'll get real lucky and get that freebie in oak anyways
Can't complain about the oak freebies not one bit. Im sincerely thankful for the supply. Odd how the door is opened mostly has been but scrounging for this and asking a couple questions has some of these sources smiling and a wave when I come by.
So this is what I mean by a score! Pile of blocks at a pallet processing center. Guy was nice to leave the box out for any lucky anyone. Nice results and then this bin here at home gets filled up. Currently headed to home now. Maybe 10-15 mins got this. The best part is that this plant doesn't accept any MB stuff so Im always seeing the HT IPPC label on the blocks or one out of the set. Peace of mind for sure.
If i did end up buying it i would split it and see. Those blocks arent always oak though, such a mixture however its a source that tends to have it often. I can usually tell when it is oak when its heavy. Thats often the big indicator and Im doing pretty good at guessing what it start then I cut it to confirm. The smell when I cut a thick board of it yesterday came out, then saw the grain. The more I cut a clean cut of the length not width way gives me much more insight of what the wood is. Some is not specific but it helps me learn what it is or may be. Too many different chunks to really start asking questions.
