I recently acquired a husky 51 with a 18" bar .325 pitch. I would like to put a 20" bar with 3/8 pitch. Can this be done?

It can be done but that's a lot of chain to pull for a 51

How about a 16" bar. would still like to go to 3/8 pitch?

I think that would be more suited.

Just out of curiosity, why do want to put a 3/8 on? I have two 55's and they are reasonably fast with a .325

I don't know! Just a preference. Maybe I will just leave the .325 pitch 18" bar and just get a new chain it is a secondary saw.

Sure it can be done, but ask yourself why?

It will have more vibration and a 20" bar is extremely optimistic. 20".

Why do you think narrow kerf chain is popular?

Thanks all for the input. I decided to stick with the 18" bar with .325 pitch that came on the saw. I replaced the sprocket and bearing and purchased a new chain.
Can't wait t o get it into some wood once this weather breaks.

If you can find some 23rs chain, you might like it on your 51. I have run the 20 lpx and the 20 rc on this size saw, but I think I like the Stihl chain better.

My 51 wears a 16" bar with 325 chain - I would NOT go 20" bar on this saw and certainly not 3/8 - too much for this saw. If you move to a new bar/chain, I'd move to 16" for this saw - better match for the power. Muffler mod is very easy to do for this saw - mine perked up a bit with the mod - worth doing IMO. Cheers!

Not to hijack the thread but NH_Wood do you have any more info on your 51 Muffler Mod, I have a 55 and would like to do that too.

Hi Airbmc - sure thing. the muffler opens up easily. I removed the material as shown in the first pic, then I ground the lip off the deflector in the second pic. Real quick mod. Cheers!

No worries - just remember to re-tune after modding. Cheers!
