I run both a 20" and 25 " on my MS361 / 362 saws. they seem to be fine. But that is about the max i would want to go on them. This guy is running a 28", seems a little excessive

    Stihl MS361 Chainsaw W/28" Bar
Saw is used so it has scuffs and scratches but nothing serious. Nothing broken. Has strong compression so you have to push the decompression button to start it. Runs good. Has 1 28" bar and chain and a tip cover. I don't have any other extras for it. Just what you see in the photos. $400 NO CHECKS OR MONEY ORDERS! I can't text and I don't often check my e-mail so if you're interested c

Yes a little to much bar, but a good running 036 or ms 361 will pull it in softwood better than you might think.

Softwood sure. Try it on hardwood and I'd bet it stop a lot. I bought a 25" ES bar for my 361. What a waste. Should have just got another 20" ES B&C. Ran it exactly once. Cut one piece of wood and promptly removed it and it's been hanging ever since. Excuse to buy a MS461 to put it on, IMHO...

I was running my stock 361 with a 25" ES bar and semi chisel full skip on some Birch a couple weeks ago, went right through it. was quite impressed. But think using a 28 and you may have some oiling issues?

I have 2 Stihl 036's and a 28" bar is way to much. I run 20" bars on them both.
    These saws are only 60cc.

That's way too much bar for a 60cc. For me, 28" is max bar length for a 70cc.

"New clutch" in the first description seems telling.

Id run a 28" on my 044-10mm stock :(, but Id only do it for a cut or 2 I really think 28+ is better suited to a 80+cc machine, guess it depends on the oiler situation really?? I run a 28" or a 32" on a 288 also stock/MM. Like said above I cut only hard wood I really don't even see softwood- fir and the like here in Michigan, we have soft hardwood- Cottenwood, Aspen, what most consider lesser woods, no evergreen though, different strokes for folks I guess. I caught that about the new clutch also, makes you wonder.

I ran a 28" full skip on my 361 for the big wood before I got my 066. It worked, but it was no race winner-that's for sure!

I maxed it out and it oiled it decent. Wasn't great, but it got me thru a 36" oak and the bar and chain lived.

    My thoughts exactly. .

In softwood, with full skip? It would do fine and I'm sure many Westcoast fallers have used this set up.

Hardwood? 20" full comp is where this saw shines. :)

I know some "westcaost fallers" and none of them use smaller than 70cc saws, most with 28" bars. Imagine trying to cut a 40" Douglas Fir with a 60cc and a 28" bar... boy would that suck. I think it sucks with a 70cc, but I know it can be done... image.jpg

That looks like some heavy lifting. I know their noodled down but those are still some big chunks of wood.

Sean's 036 ran the hell outta the 25" it was wearing at his place last year. Surprised me how good it was, even in that big sugar maple.

Just because you have a 28" bar on a saw doesn't mean your cutting a 28" tree. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Has anybody ever figured out how much horsepower it takes to pull the extra chain around a roller nose?
I need to cut down a dead elm this weekend and am tempted to put a 24" on my 034 and see how it does.

I don't think anyone is saying it won't work. Oiler maxed, chain sharp, full skip, and rakers kept high it will work. But there are better options. I can always take my 28" off the 066 and put it on my 036 and get some video of it buried in some oak if anyone is interested.

I'd like to see that :binoculars: Maybe a video of both saws comparing both saws, same b/c, same log? :emb:

I am running full comp on the 066. Might be a little rough on the 036 to run that. :DI have some loops of skip hanging around.

Yeah, that is a good running 036.

I hear ya.. For a tall guy doing limb work, this would probably be an ideal setup. And full comp could be used as well if you are only utilizing a portion of the bar.
