After getting 7 different bucks on camera over the summer, my dad and I weren't seeing any signs of life during hunting season so far. We were barely even finding fresh tracks. Yesterday, after seeing nothing again, I went up higher than i had before just to see what was up there. I cut a game trail that angles up a REALLY steep hill. As I went up I thought I could see daylight at the top so I kept going. At the top it flattened out but was pretty brushy. The daylight I saw was just the terrain change and some vine maples growing in a blowdown. I didn't stray far at the top because I was in unfamiliar territory. I pulled my phone out to try the GPS feature to mark the spot to look at later (I had never used my phone's GPS before). Turned out I'd gone high enough to get a phone signal and I sent my sister a screen shot of the GPS point so someone new where I was and we exchanged a couple of messages. I looked up from my phone and saw this buck looking at me 30-40 yards away through a small window in the timber. I slid my phone into my pocket, raised my rifle, and ended my season. That was about 12:30. Dragging wasn t an option so we boned him out and were back down to the road at 3:30.
Ain't that just how deer hunting goes.....I can't count the number of times I have raised my head or turned and there's a deer looking at me. Good job blacktail
