I've got a long term project started and before scouring eBay, I figure I'll ask here first. I'm building a 272 and already have a bottom & top end. I'm missing everything else ~ tank, top cover, recoil, flywheel, carburetor/intake, etc. My cases are older 61 Practica which uses the two piece ignition. If you've got anything you'd like to part with, let me know what you're looking to get and we'll work something out.
    Thanks!

You will need a 266 top cover to clear the 272 cylinder, you will also need a 272 OEM intake block and long carb screws. Aftermarket ones leak and will trash a saw. They are rare as hens teeth made of unobtanium and in decent shape usually run north of $100. You might be able to find a nos intake block. As for starters, whew boy, that’s going to be a crap shoot, there are 3 different pulley lengths. The recoil housings are all the same, so you should be ok to snag the first one you come upon.

I bought a European 266 top cover copy off ebay, it isn’t exactly Husky orange, but older 2 series will hardly all color match anyway. I never set it on a 266 case yet to see how it fits, but will later today and let you know how it fits…

Let me look through my pile of 266 stuff and see what all is good that isn’t spoken for on the 4 I’m building.

Thanks Ryan. I knew about the intake block (saw an OEM on eBay earlier for relatively cheap) but I didn’t know about the top cover. I assumed that a 61 would fit because afleetcommand has an older 61/272 with the original top and it clears somehow (must’ve modified something under the hood) I know there’s something odd with flywheels and ignition timing so I’m pretty sure I need to stick with the older 2 piece ignition system and matching flywheel. The recoil thing is news to me. I appreciate you looking and for the insight.

The newish gray 61 top cover does clear a 272 top end most times without cutting, but they are getting spendy as well…. I think the open port 61 newish saw top cover (orange) fits 2 piece ignition cases and clears 272 top ends….

The 2 piece ignition is way better than the 1 piece. If it is good, keep it for sure.

So I have a tank, recoil minus the pulley, a couple fine thread clutches, I think I have a 163A carb that is good, an oil pump, and miscellaneous screws ect.
