Just got permission to take what I want of any fallen/standing dead/has a problem and needs culled from the herd, about a 1/2 acre plot, and only 1 mile from home. Stopped out and tossed on my new to me cutting headgear muff/mask/helmet combo I got on local online rummage sale, never used, $3.00. So much snow I couldn't get to much but saw 1 standing dead with no bark no branches, grey as can be, not too far in, what the heck. Got the saw and thought a small cottonwood would be in my campfire pile. As it falls, snags another tree and on my first time wearing the headgear, WHACK across the old melon! Thankfully only about a 2 inch diameter branch, but still startled me and glad I had my new lid on. Second surprise is this old grey tree is ash:yes:. Can't wait til snow melts to see what I just may have Scored!

Was paying attention to other things on the first cut. When it was down and I went to cut the 1st round I instantly could smell the ash hint of sweet instead of the pungent cottonwood aroma.

PPE, good stuff... I didn't have mine on one day cuz I was just trimming a trail, thought I would be OK and cut a grapevine and KaPowwee. Busted my glasses and cut the side of my face pretty good when a stick came out from above me when I touched that vine.

Saw stars for a couple minutes too.

Stay safe and enjoy the Ash.

Congrats on such a good score; hope it pans out well for you. Good thing about the head gear; that is on my list as well.
