Found this baby at the transfer station (dump) today! It's only a 2.5 but great for the saws. Amazingly the gas pours right out easily without dripping even without all those springs and other foolishness on "today's" gas cans. YEA! Now I have 2, and yes to was from the dump also I still have 3-4 of the 5 gal versions, antiques now but I guard them like Ft. Knox
Nice find! I have been hoarding these type of cans for the past several years. Picked up a couple a garage sales etc.. I hate most of the new ones... I bought a replacement spout off eBay for one, although it wasnt cheap. Did you ever look at what these sell for on eBay? Crazy money for a clean one.
I guess in DC and the EPA the spilled gas from using their new tanks is OK and it's only the fumes that they worry about. I was not aware that spilled gas emitted no fumes.
I spilled a bunch from a new can until I said enough is enough and found more of the old style cans to use. I thought the same thing, I'm spilling a ton of gas how is this good? I will say the new Jill's cans work pretty well and are the new EPA cans.
nice score!!! I pulled a few preban plastic cans out of my moms garage when she was selling her house. 2 gallon one is perfect for saw juice! Only problem is my wife ripped the spout cap off the plastic tab that connects it to the spout when I was away and she needed to run the generator.
Some of those cans with a spring loaded vent that you could release with a finger spread while you wear pouring. Amazing that they could engineer something that worked great back then, then abandon it for junk that doesn't.
after seeing this thread I did a CL search, and found an older listing for one of these, and one of the old metal 5 gallon round cans for free. Too bad they were gone.
Snapped some pics of the can I was talking about. I'm guessing this was from the 1950's. I bet a "few" guys on here would like this sitting on their shelf or in their shop. They even have a piece of steel spot welded on there so you can tip it and release the spring loaded relief valve with one hand...EASILY. Even has the original stopper in the end of the flexible spout. THIS is what they should make now instead of the garbage that is out there. Works with no spilling.
I bet your right Kevin, esp. the Mac collectors. I'd have a hard time actually using that one myself.
I have half a dozen of the plastic vented cans. I buy them when ever I see them at garage sales or CL.
Saw a great idea on a Facebook page, get a marine fuel tank, the kind with a hose and a primer bulb. Cut off the hose a few inches past the primer bulb, fuel the saw by squeezing the bulb, no lifting or spilling.
We still sell Eagle brand at my work. They come out of eastern WV. The nozzles are always what seem to go missing or break off. Had I known the future, I'd have hoarded several of the old style cans. I've had to resort to retrofitting my plastic cans with a new nozzle and vent. They work well. I also have one of the new fancy cans from Surecan. It was a gift last Christmas. I have used it a couple times, but I still prefer the older cans. Stupid California.
Like this, you can also just buy the hose and bulb, and modify your lousy EPA cans to accept the hose
