Where were you when you heard? I had just gotten out of the shower. I had the news on in the next room. When they broke into the live stuff, I was speechless. I called my parents and told them to leave work and go home. They both did. We were glued to the devastating views we saw on tv. Words still can't describe it today. Where were you? Never forget
I was working in the basement of a new building behind the cheddar curtain (deep in the heart of Wisconsin) installing gas piping and hvac equipment. Immediately called 99 lbs and asked if she needed me home then and there? Didn't know how many more attacks there would be of if anything else would happen preventing travel. Then the second tower was struck... To this day, especially whenever I watch documentaries on it, I wonder if and how I can forgive their actions.
I was in the dentist chair getting a two caps installed when the dental assistant came into the room and said a plane had just crash into the Pentagon. We all left the room and watched a small TV located in their lunch room. That was such a sad day, we must never forget. We must always be pro-active and not re-active to national threats.
Days like that one perhaps never forgets. It is sort of like when JFK was assasinated. At the time I was working in a shop and they announced it over the loud speaker. You could have heard a pin drop for a short time.
Exact same here. I met my husband for lunch that day, I finally grasped the gravity after a presidential entourage shut down the major high in Colorado, my husband was on it watched them pass.....
I was working outside on a house when the elderly resident called me inside to watch it unfold. She was just about in shock, scared and crying. I remember it as if it was yesterday. It was a time of great unity in this country. I dont know where that unity went. We are so desensitized to violence that many violent acts do not surprise us any more. Some day I will pull out the newspapers and show my kids the videos of that day. They are just not ready for it. They have asked about it, but putting it in a way for them to understand is not possible.Let us never forget.
I was at work and I will always remember what a beautiful fall day it was with no clouds in the sky and we now know why.
I was working 2nd shift in those days, so sleeping til 9 am was a regular thing... I woke up to the TV being on in the bedroom, about a minute after the first plane hit. I thought is was some kind of nightmare. Then they started replaying it and I thought we were being attacked- most definitely after the 2nd plane hit- I've never had a sinking feeling that deeply in my heart before or since. I had friends that worked blocks from the WTC. They were all ok. My uncle was a volunteer FF in our home town, and they piled into support vehicles to lend a hand- he said when they pulled in, the NYFD guys said, "those are our f@$&ing brothers in there! Stay out!" They (our local VFF's) remained in the areas dedicated to staging and such to help anyway they could. My uncle still gets emotional when describing that time, and he's not a softy at all.... We will never forget!
bocefus78 great thread! I got goosebumps just reading through this, like the minute I heard of the attack. I was a small restaurant manager at the time, and the kitchen played Howard Stern in the a.m. He went into reporter mode being able to see from his studio what was unfolding. By the time I heard of a second plane, I knew this was no accident. By the time a third plane went down, the towers collapsed before my eyes, I stepped outside and sat down in disbelief. I said many prayers that day, called family and mourned for the lives lost. I too have newspapers and live clips of that day. My second son was born a month later, and security was still tight and the buildings still burned. I WILL NEVER FORGET! God bless America!
Well said, Well Seasoned, like all y'all! Misty eyed barely describes the condition of reading everyone's posts, coupled with the sheer magnitude of remembering that day...
My wife and I were in a restaurant in Rangeley Maine. The cook came out and told everyone that a Cessna had just hit one of the towers. No big deal. Then he came running out screaming that an airliner had just hit the other tower. Total silence. We left and went back to our farm to watch it all on TV like so many others. The raw courage of so many that day was mind numbing. I remember thinking our kids, all kids, would never know an innocent world ever again.
At work, Management had an announcement over the PA. It didn't really set in until I got home and saw the news. I will never forget!!
I had took the day off work, slept late & had just sat down on the couch to watch the morning news.Seen 1 tower burning & the talking heads commented about how strange it was for a plane to hit the tower on such a bright sunny day. Was sitting there when the 2nd plane circled around & slammed right into the 2nd tower.... Right then it was absolutely clear it was no ''accident'''. I will refrain from any further comments because I'm still pizzed off & I wont get ''political"...
I first heard reports that a plane hit one of the towers as I pulled into work. Wasn't clear if it was a small private aircraft or what. It was such a clear crisp day that I couldn't understand how that could've happened. As the morning unfolded our facility began to go on lock down as I work in a building/field that was considered a potential target. When the erroneous report that the White House had been hit I think my knees literally went weak. The feeling of being under attack and the symbolism of an the assault on the capital was overwhelming. I realized how deeply rooted my feelings for our home are. I told my wife to get home but be very careful going through lights and stop signs as emergency vehicles were rolling and many people were not in their right minds. As I finally made my way home I could see the fighter jets patrolling the coast which was simultaneously comforting and unnerving.
I was delivering a Scotts Williams site trailer to Otis air base on Cape Cod. Just as I was leveling the unit someone yelled over to me to come see his portable TV (in another construction site trailer) and we both watched the replay of the first plane. Just as the commentators were talking about the first plane hitting the second plane was caught on live TV going into the second tower. Unbelievable stuff!! Just as I was finishing putting this site trailer together the base really came alive. Jersey barriers went to the front gate, MP's took positions out front and the jet planes were scrambling. Despite the reason this was happening, it was very exciting to see the activity in action at the base...the mood went from mello to intense in a matter of minutes, unreal.
