Went to put new files in my Stihl 2 in 1 filing guide and the 7/32" files wont fit. Turns out to be a 13/64" file. WTH! .375 chain is supposed to use a 7/32 file or so I thought. Now I have to buy another size? Kinda makes me wanna go back to freehand sharpening with just a file or using the generic Oregon type filing guide.
Nothing wrong with freehand especially if the teeth have a witness mark at the top showing the proper angle. If not, it’s not too bad once you’re used to it and you gain the muscle memory. The thing that I had to be mindful of besides the angle was the depth. Go too deep on into the tie strap and you end up with a crazy hook/beak, or too shallow and it cuts slower.
I like the 2 in 1. I found one new 13/64" file and will switch it back and forth in the guide for now. Ill order a box of 13/64 files. I use that size chain the most and go through them.
Stihl calls for a 13/64 file for 3/8 chain. Everyone else recommends 7/32. Your 2 in 1 needs 13/64. The 2 in 1 with 7/32 files is for .404 chain
Yep, that’s a Steel thing. The further back you file on the tooth, the lower it gets. The 13 will maintain the proper hook in your 2/1. The 7 would start to loose it. I experienced that w/ my Timberline jig.
I’d recommend taking the flat file out and only use it every 3-4 times sharpening. The height gauge can get really aggressive cutting each time
