I picked up a mid 1940's Delta scroll saw. A big, heavy bugger with a 24" throat. I'm in the process of cleaning it up and I want to change the gear oil in the sump. I've done some reading and a similar model takes #10 gear oil. Does anyone know the quick and dirty for a on the shelf equivalent? I'm trying to make sure the major components work before cleaning it up and building a base for it. It is going to take some real estate in the shop, but it should be worth it. It looks like it was removed from a basement in a clean out. Just dust covered and a pretty new belt. The motor looks original and works quietly and well with little vibration. A bit of the gear oil spilled prior to me getting it so I would like to start fresh. I appreciate any help on this.
Got a text into a buddy that's some kinda certified lubrication specialist. Should have an answer soon.
Thank you. I have to get this thing off the floor and onto a bench to really get into it. Too many projects.
#10 is an ISO grade system number. See chart in link below. VISCOSITY- SAE, ISO or AGMA? | Doolittle Oil On the chart #10 ISO is roughly an SAE 0W engine oil or SAE 30 to 40 weight gear oil which you may not find. SAE 75W gear oil should be fine.
