I'm not near as fancy as the OP. I use a metal spatula to deal with coals and ash. A few pushes at an angle to the back seems to make the coals...

Going to get brisk overnight for this time of year, sitting at -11C/12F, dropping to -19C/-2F overnight. Then a warm up to follow in a few days.
