I used ironwood (hophornbeam) for a big cant hook I have, it has held up very well. The rings are so tight in that wood.
I've cooked on the charcoal grille many times over the winter but only had a few winter fires in the keyhole pit for steaks. Planning on cooking...

Black birch rates right up there with white oak/honey locust/hickory if you ask me. Great BTUS, burns hot and lasts long.

Yes, Eric nailed it. Basically a Norway maple with beautiful large burgundy leaves, which are burgundy from the day they pop out in the spring....
