I bought a Napoleon fireplace insert new $$$$ about 10 years ago for our downstairs fireplace. Use it pretty consistently all winter. I replaced the masonry on our upstairs fireplace about 5 years ago, been watching for a decent deal on another insert. Found an almost new Napoleon insert this weekend for $350. Super happy. Told my son now we have a reason to cut more firewood. He wasn't really impressed.
Insert insert, insert more firewood, stay nice and warm in winter. How old is your son? Some of the most memorable times of my life were sent with my dad in the woods, cutting wood, hunting, etc..

We picked up the insert Monday...we also got up early Monday to split some wood. It been hot here. He's 13, great help, but doesn't enjoy getting up early.
