It's a lovely drive, through a state park, past some tiny little towns, and lots of forested land. It'll get better and better as fall arrives.

great score sir. The wood in the front seat looks like hickory to me. Even better if so! Did you have any room on the roof rack?

Thank you! If I could have I would have used the rack! It could be hickory, doesn’t smell like hickory and the leaves around were definitely maple, the ash is easy to identify, here in NW NJ we have alot of trees that have very similar bark and ring formation, the hickory around here usually stinks to high heaven, this wood actually smells sweet

Good one Midwinter! Maybe you should consider changing your name to "Meme-winter"? I never heard wood described this way before mrfancyplants , but hey, it works!

As for me I have been busy working on a painting about my memoirs of growing up in a clamming culture on the Great South Bay in the 70's.

Also I have been building another firewood shelter and though it isn't large requires me to put a gutter on it believe it or not. Reason I need the shelter is the house next to me sold in an inside deal. I was considering buying it for a rental income property, but it was never publicly offered and a contractor got it from his friends at the realtor (wink wink). Anyway the guy introduced himself to me the other day and seems nice, but It's only going to be a matter of time before I'm asked to move one of my firewood shelters that the old neighbors let me keep on his property behind his dilapidated garage.
So I'm being proactive and building this shelter in a tiny alcove where if heavy rainwater water runs off its roof it could flood the entrance to my basement so I need gutters to direct the water away. I'm thinking my dimensional pallet scores can be kept in this shelter stacked tight so I always have very dry wood to mix with wood of questionable moisture content.

I have a painting that reminds me of clamming: IMG_20190820_34465.jpg

Too bad you never got a chance to make an offer. I guess you will have a lot of contractor activity next door for awhile. I hope someone nice buys it after the reno.

Yes Midwinter that could be a painting about picking for razor clams or steamer clams at low tide, or even crabs on the marsh. It's got a nice atmosphere to it...wet and clammy lol!
My painting is more about the heyday of commercial clamming with the bay full of clam boats and young men eagerly trying to make their small fortunes, not realizing the clams wouldn't be there forever in those numbers. My older brothers who are 6 and 10 years my senior got a good head start in life with clamming, but I came in during the decline and barely could pay my thru school with it. So I remember the great set being on the water with my father and brothers, but it was always bitter sweet for me. My father is now one of the very last ones on the bay, but he is nearing 90 and picks and chooses his days. My Son made an amateur video 6 years ago in high school about my father and the bay if anyone's interested.

I'm featured in the second half talking about my experience and the problems plaguing the bay today keeping it from thriving again. Like I said it's an amateur film made by a 16 yr old so not perfect, but pretty well done considering. My son is now starting to work professionally trying to make it in the documentary film industry.

Yes too bad about the deal and the usual politics at play because I would have been able to use the yard while getting my feet wet as a property invester. However the house needs a lot of work and updating and it can only be a one family in this zone so not even sure it will repay my investment. I told the builder to keep me in mind and maybe we can work out a deal after he does the rehab work. If the price is right I'll still consider, but it will now be more money of course than had I got it first.

Too bad it's so freshly cut. You'd be able to take more, as it would be a bit lighter.

What, No pictures of the skinny dipping? :whistle:Just be careful, you never know who's watching :nerd: :nerd::ithappened::ithappened::ithappened:Remember Deliverance?

Pretty little spot you stumbled on Midwinter and surprisingly everything still looks lush and green when things are starting to change down here. Maybe whats happening though is we are having shorter days now and yet the average high temps for the last three weeks in NJ have been 95 degrees +! Maybe the trees cant handle it? Leaves are not really turning color here, but falling off or just looking dusky brownish or pale and dry.

Must be nice to know you have your own fresh cut (to car size no less) earmarked logs waiting for you in such a natural setting..Oh yeah, and no Sheriff to hassle you.
I bet you have been using the drive time to meditate on your life and get your spirit rejuvenated. I've been enjoying the documentation and I know you will make very handsome stacks of firewood eventually.

You, my friend, need to move north, out of NJ! Our leaves turn orange and red, not brown, and not until October.
You get it! True, I am sacrificing the adrenaline rush, but this is a much more relaxing way to hoard.
This wood is sanity wood, to get me outside and keep me from bugging out over the winter.
