I recently purchase a new Stihl MS261 with 20" bar. The bars from my 290 (16 & 20") fit it as well. Does anyone switch bars between saws. Im considering selling the new bar and putting funds toward other chain saw stuff, rather than having two 20"ones. Thoughts/opinions?
I occasionally swap bars, but since we got both saws back I will leave to 20" on the 029 and use the 25-28" combo on the 362. Run the 16" on 261, 20" on 290 and big bars on your 461.
Putting the 20" on 261 for now. Havent used it yet. 290 sounds tired. Still havent been in touch with him to port. Ill keep the 261 in PU bar for unexpected scores where i need to buck..colder weather though when i have time.
I swap bars between saws all the time. 346 either runs a 16” Husky or an 18” Sugi. Depends where I’m cutting and what mood I’m in. My boys 365sp gets either a 20 or the 24. And the 394 wears the 24” if it doesn’t have the 42”. Seems the 357 always has the 20” Sugi. It’s perfectly balanced to me and the chains I have for it are tuned to it. The black jonsered always has its roller bar too.
Most of my swapping is with the larger saws. I’ll swap between 20” and 24” on the 680 and 695. Most of the time on the 757s they will have 24” but on occasion I’ve run 32” and 36”. I have lots of smaller saws so will just grab one with the bar I want, rather than swap them. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Sort of off topic, I hope buZZsaw BRAD doesn’t mind, but does anyone run a skip tooth chain(I think that is what they are called) on a large bar to accommodate a smaller saw?
i own one skip tooth chain for the 36" bar for my 460 and it handles it well. (its the only chain i have for it and i DREAD when it dulls) Ive used it 3-4 times since i got it last September. Saw doesnt bog down with it. 36" bar on 460. Not sure the shortest skip tooth available. What length would you want to run mrfancyplants ? 20" would be ideal for the wood you cut IMO!

20” probably would do it for me. This one to the left of the frame is about the largest round I’ve dealt with and i’m Not sure if my free 18” 37cc Home Depot saw with safety tip, will get me there. I’m not sure the model/size Stihl I was borrowing; it probably could get me there, especially with a new chain. I believe that round is no longer attached to the ground, so I might be able to put it on it’s side, cut into it a bit, flip it back up and then try to split where I cut?
Yes, I have a full skip chain I used on the 24" bar when our 362 was stock. Since we had port work done, it will pull a 28" bar with semi-skip chain great.
