Noticed this spring a couple of Elm's didn't leaf out and the bark was gone on most of them so I did the dirty deed today and yesterday on them. They were in the ditch on the road allowance right near my driveway.
There's also some mystery wood I cut from a friends new place a month ago. The ends were really yellow when cut but are now brown. Very wide growth rings too. There was no bark on these either so I have no idea what they are but I do know they will burn.

Nice looking work Chris F . Since i hand split i cringe at the mention of elm.
Your mystery wood may be tulip (yellow) poplar? Any pics of it?

No pics. It was growing along a cement wall that had a small fence mounted on it and they were dead when he bought the place last year. The biggest one was only around five inches at the butt.

Mulberry...it looks almost fluorescent yellow when cut then turns a rusty red/brown after a few weeks or so

Mulberry doesn't have that wide of growth rings though. The lower the BTU, the wider the rings, and conversely as well.

I love me some dead elm. It's great firewood.

You have an awesome set up there. Elm is evil to hand split. Good thing you have that monster splitter.
