Since ive joined FHC ive seen several variations on the use of cinder/cement blocks as corners for log racks. I scrounged some blocks couple months back and decided to give it a try. Im inundated with shorties (10-14" long splits) and figured this would be ideal for them. I made a 1'x10' frame out of reclaimed 2x6 and screwed it together. Cut two 12' of the same in half and set in holes of blocks. Had to shave a little off to get good fit. I then attached verticals to frame with screws. I didnt block the center as logs are 30% lighter being short vs. standard 16" splits and the slight sag will pull ends inward. Tried this before on other racks and it seems to work well. Holds over a half cord (face area) of wood. Have Two more blocks and will make a second. Been putting off stacking as it seems to be my least favorite firewood making task! Have maybe 3 more half cords of shorties! wood is mostly maple and ash. I have a bad habit of stacking too high. The stack was stable for its height. I can always add a diagonal stake/brace or two if needed.
Started to use landscape timbers on blocks. I thought about the 2X6s or 2X8s. Looks good and I hope it works well.
It depends on how much wood is put on it. I have a tendency to overload. I have some 4x4's but they are only 8'ers.
