We had a thunderstorm cell come through this week and blew a red oak over at the front of my driveway into a white oak across the driveway. Must have been a big blow since these trees have been here a while now and two tipped....

Also had a good size hickory tip over about 25 degrees right next to this red oak which means it will blow down in the future. I also think the hickory will get caught up in the trees also.... There no clear path to drop it.

I'm concerned I can't deal with the red oak as it's hung up in another tree and I don't have the room to pull it back out of the tree it's leaning against. Might need to spend money on a pro with a bucket truck or a tree monkey. :picard:

Yeah what he said. That looks pretty easy unlike this one I got two weeks ago. Locust hanging in a young Ash, waiting to smash into my sunroom. Cutting it at the base will not drop it...

It will need to be pulled back a long way, and there’s no room to pull it back with the tractor before I hit the woods..

Can you lash a snatch block to a nearby tree and redirect the pulling force to avoid a straight line pull?
    Just wondering out loud...

Maybe... I'll be dismantling a lot of fence on both sides of the driveway... What you can't see is the tree extends another 30 to 35 feet and the whole crown is sitting on the top of of the crown of a a big white oak. It's not going to roll left or right. The base of this tree is about 20" in diameter. just one of those things you don't expect, bad luck I guess.

The hickory that is leaning now (you can see it in the picture) is about 24" in diameter and I don't see how it won't get hung up also....

See your point. Maybe it’s best to have a truck come in and take it out in pieces. That fence doesn’t look like it would be fun to dismantle and reassemble. Easier to pay a few bucks.

i would move fence as needed. Cut it free from the roof ball and keep cutting 4' sections off until it falls.

Or 3' or 2' sections. But if you don't have experience doing this you still might be best served to get someone else to do it. For sure you really need to know what you are doing when you cut that tree from the bottom up. Some of us have done hundreds of them but not everyone has.

They don’t call em “widow makers” for nothing.
When in doubt, call a pro.

Agree here with Sav and Brad but as Sav says if you are not comfortable doing this get a pro.

Got it down. The power company was kind enough to cut the top out of it since it was going to hit the power line on the street pole.

I got the rest down without much trouble. Glad it’s done, now I need to get it split and stacked.
