Outside all day till now-hot for sure (even the breeze was hot) but it was a good day :dennis:

Been a busy last couple days.

    Had horsie issues.

Daughters old (30) mare plugged up a gut and we had to get the vet out.

Happily we got her plumbing moving again, but she is on wet food only for a while and been in the arena where we can keep track of "leavings" every few hours.

Old people have issues and so do our old critters. :picard:

Had to head down to the barn at dawn to fed old horse and listen to her gut with the stethoscope to make sure things are working.

    Arrrrrrrgh.

Without even one cup of coffee in me I was not real happy.

But old horse was chipper and greeted me at the gate..

    Thanks B
Unfortunately we are not out of the woods yet with the old mare.

We are on a pretty tight feeding schedule until next week of 6 times a day and all her hay must be wet..

The issue started because the old girl does not drink enough water (Many old horses will get to where they "sip" water instead of tank it in.

This issue causes the hay to dry out in their gut and CLOG UP the bowel.

After we get through this week we are going on a 3 times a day feed schedule for her.

Any time a horse develops a gut issue like this there is a much higher probability that it will happen again.

We were lucky to have caught it right when it was getting started and intervened quickly.

Had she been a somewhat unattended pasture horse she would have died, or the issue would have required surgery to remedy.....and this is horrendously expensive
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and on a 30 year old horse with other problems the choices become very few...... Chapter closes on them :(

I am not overly optimistic as far as the long term goes for her.....she might fool us and be good for a few more seasons.

At 30 years old her days are numbered.....

We have several horses boarded here that are all up in years, and sadly they all seem to do fine until some little thing goes sour and then the train wreck happens.

Ah well.... it's just part of life at the ranch.....OK

Sounds like most of us, except for maybe the hay part. I won’t judge.

Sorry to hear this Snowy, my guy got colicky years ago and I ended up walking my black horse up and down the unlit road all night offering water on occasion. Things finally passed, including my anxiety. Thirty years is a good lifetime, you’ve done well. I hope everyone finds peace.

Anyone know what’s to be expected?

I’ll check back over the next few days... by the way we have boocoo strawberries and blueberries!!!

    THANKS

If we have to send her to horsie heaven tomorrow she has had a great life with us.

We got her for the daughter back in 1992.
The kid learned a lot of great horsemanship skills on the old Paint mare.
A lot of horse shows, drill team and on it went.

She is part of the family ya know.

I cry when we have to bring in a customer for a bad deal and the horse ends up having to go away....
    They are such wonderful creatures.

I had two big Shire horses some years back.
17.2 hand tall and 2200 pounds.
    4 whites....
    (Look like Clydesdales)

The one mare was my personal saddle horse..
Like riding in a big old cadillac on her back....smoooooooooooth

WWW went through here a 1/2 hour ish before this. It says multiple crashes. Glad he missed it, already on a second 14+ hour day and not home yet. Skid marks are interesting, I wonder what happened but the little Uhaul (some of them say max 45MPH) on a 75 speed limit highway makes one wonder.
