I’m going with American basswood. Or some kind of Tilia species..

I worked in a sawmill in the 80’s, we sold a lot of Basswood for furniture. It’s easy to work with and accepts stain easily.

I cut up the top half of a what turned out to be a basswood tree March of last year. Gave the splits to my stepdaughter for her fireplace. She is a "casual" burner. It was only ten months seasoned and burned very nice. Very low btu's so ok for shoulder season or firepit/kindling. Splits are feather light when seasoned.
Is that your weekend score cigarsmokingzombie ?

That is not my score. My buddy was thinking about cutting it down but based on the feedback, we think we will leave it up :(

    Agreed.

Unless you really want it, it's not great firewood. I have burned a bit, including last year. Probably 2/3 of a cord. I have a couple decent sized ones that fell, to cut up, and knowing me, I'll process it too, but it's low BTU. 14 mbtu a cord.

Now I feel cheated. I worked in a sawmill and even worked up to head sawyer but never had any bass. Mostly oak. One time we had a woods that was almost all cottonwood. You could smell it a mile away when going to the mill. Funny though, nobody wanted you to come into the house before changing clothing.

Glad you posted this, I have something that looks similar close to one of our sheds. Good shade tree.

Yes. I remember once when I was still offbearer that we had an order for some cedar and the guy wanted them cut into 4 x 4. What a joy it was! Smelled great and was super light.

My dad cut up a bunch of basswood for our cabin in the UP of Michigan
after one winter (weekends only) he stated he would rather burn snowballs than basswood again

    lesson learned

I checked the stump and it was sprouting new shoots. Felled in mid march. Definitely basswood. IMG_0674.JPG IMG_0675.JPG
    Some serious big leaves.
