I burn a ton of it, only because I have so much. I'm treating it like a weed and trying to burn as much as I can so my "good" wood grows better.
Ive cant say ive seen a 3-5 year old ash rounds, so not sure. Ive seen fallen ash logs in the woods that are years old and have these black "mushrooms"/fungi on them. The photos are reminiscent of utility poles IMO. Is there any type of chemical odor MaineMtnMan ?
Not really Buzzsaw. But despite being really large,. My sniffer doesn't work to good! I'm pretty sure I would be able to smell if it were a pole though,. I'm familiar with those.
I agreed with the utility pole until recently thinking about it. All the rounds there looked like that on the end. I went back today, but they had burned the whole pile....
maybe im wrong then. You described several at the dump, most rotted. Perhaps someones long unused pile of ash rounds they finally decided to get rid of. Sure looks like a utility pole in your pics thats for sure. Nice score of the other wood you just posted The back logs in the first pic look like they have been partly put thru a splitter with some serious shredding going on.
Even when i was camping the last two days i caught myself sniffing the limbs i scrounged. Most were starting to decay and smelled like "earth"! Camped in groves of Eastern white pine and i may hafta borrow your Miracle Whip mrfancyplants to get the pine sap off the car! My flip flop bottoms are coated with the stuff!
i was burning poplar pallet scraps camping and they kicked out some good heat real fast. Not that we needed it
