San Josef Bay is a sandy beach about 15 miles from the community of Holberg, BC where Woodwidow and myself first lived and worked when we were first married. Today we went out to the beach with our oldest daughter, her husband and the dogs. Looking out the west along the beach. Woodwidow and myself had not been back to this beach in 35 years. The tide did not drop enough for us to get there without getting wet. I think this is the most photographed rock on the beach. When Woodwidow and myself first went to this beach it took 4 hours of slugging through mud up to your knees to get there. It is now wheelchair accessible.
Those who come from afar will always try but then find out how cold it is. The surfers and surf kayakers always wear dry suits when in the water. 20 minutes in the water and you are in trouble for hypothermia.
I figured it was cold just by the way everyone was dressed. This reminds me of when our granddaughter was maybe 10 years old and lived in Omaha, NE. We picked her up while there in our motor home and drove back to MI. She was really thrilled seeing Lake MI and was determined that she had to swim in that big "pool." Guess she didn't know the difference yet between pools and lakes and oceans, etc. I tried to talk he out of it because it was only July 4 and the water would be too cold yet. But she was determined. She and my wife was also determined that I would be out there with her. I got to the water's edge but could not go further. Finally after much prodding I convinced my wife that I was not going into that water, so she put her suit on and went out. Ha! She got to the water's edge and stopped right away! Sometimes on July 4 the water in the north is maybe warm enough to swim if the air is hot but not always. This year I'm betting it is cold simply because of lack of sunshine and lots of rain. Perhaps in southern Lake Mi it may be warm enough but not on the northern edge!
I found a picture of San Josef bay taken 47 years ago. Nothing much has changed other than we were the only ones out there that day.
You have to go to the beach in the winter at 3am around our coast to have no one! I am amazed at the amount of people crammed into coastal SC now. How big the population of Charleston has grown in just my short life. Even from when I was in middle school. No offense but I don't know what it is with people from Ohio, seems like every fourth one is from there?? It's actually a joke here among us South Carolinians about people coming from Ohio. My buddy and wife follow the Facebook SC meme page and there lots of Ohio ones. Haha. Again I have nothing against Ohio people there plenty on this and other sites...again a huge disproportionate number almost?? I am from the coast. But as a Forester there is nothing for me to do in an urban environment and I just don't like city and all those people. I am so glad I left there about 17 years ago (when I left for Clemson). I miss the water and friends but that's it. And I am on an inland lake and it's nice in different ways. No spending an hour to wash and flush the boat after every trip. Since I was in middle school. The Charleston metro population has doubled. That's been in 20-25 years.
Now there is something I can relate to. I just hate when I have to go to a city, or even a village. Leave me in the country and preferably in the woods.
