The Denver mountain park is performing some fire mitigation cutting and letting people have the the wood for firewood. I will be busy this summer
WHOA! There's an award in this score....besides the score. Take a trailer next time. How close to home?
I'd be buying some doughnuts and delivering them to the people who did that, just a way to say ''thank you''
wow! Awesome score! Can you cut at your leisure? Looks like manageable sizes. What species? Keep us updated on your progress.
I’m not sure how many are going to be taking wood from the pile I called Denver mountain parks and asked them what was up with the project. They issued me a permit to be on the land and to gather the wood. Not sure how many others have called or not. The species Barry from lodge pole pine, Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir etc of what you find in Coniferous forest. My permit is good through the end of October and they are working a couple of thousand acres of heavy forested land. So even if there are others collecting wood I will get plenty of wood. This area is only 3 miles from home so a quick 10 minute trip to gather it up.
Glad they are letting people take the wood and not just chipping it. Do you know if they got one of the Forest Service grants for fuel mitigation? There were a few fires SW of Denver that burned so hot that they sterilized the soil. Burned all the organic material including the humus making it difficult for forest regeneration and causing mudslides that contaminated the rivers. Seems that those fires “lit a fire” under the butts of the land managers forcing them to take some action. Get as much as you can!!!!
That is a real good question. I have no idea who is paying for the work. I do know there are lots of project like this all over the state I am glad this one is in my back yard for lots of reasons
I’ve been working on a project SW of Pikes peak. The grant money comes from the state through the second program on this page. Grants & Funding Assistance - Colorado State Forest Service Couple days of work, a couple times a year over 5 years and the non-profit gets a chunk of money. First compartment of 5 is cut. Cutting Limber Pine, Englemann Spruce and dead Aspen. Supposed to remove 80% of the softwoods and leave the Aspen for Elk Browse. Very rewarding work but a challenge working at over 10,000’ for this sea level creature.
