I would have loved to take some slabs from this but the tree is pretty far from the street and I have no way to move it in full log form. I wish I had a mill, will have to pick one up sometime but first I need a more powerful saw. Would have made some beautiful lumber for sure.
I love straight grained oak for firewood, it's easily my fav. Pops right apart splittin' and stacks great. Burns awesome. But when I'm cutting it I can't help but to think how beautiful it would be as flooring or heck anything. When 1/4 sawed the rays can be stunning. (not my pic)
Ironically, I had a truck load of red oak flooring delivered yesterday... it’s acclimating for a few days and will installed next week. The Mrs. is finally getting the new floors she has wanted since we moved to our current house. I am swimming in red oak right now! Some for the house, some for the stove. It’s glorious.
Went back to the brother and sister inlaw’s today. Did some more cutting, filled the trailer with more than I should have. Took it slow on the way home. Thanks M2theB for the heads up on the widow makers, I made sure to be much more aware today as I was working directly under that dead standing oak that was probably hit by the big one that went down in the storm. Overall it was my best day of hoarding ever! Much more enjoyable to cut the wood yourself. I even found some more wood to scrounge on my way home. Only had room to take a round and branch. I think it’s beech. I will post some pics of anyone can help on the ID.
Yup, thats beech. Seasons fast and good btus's. Looks like you'll be swimming in wood in no time Road-side Oak Great score on the beech and great work gettin it done on the oak. I know where you'll be tomorrow. Gonna do some cuttin myself if the rain holds off.
Unloaded the trailer and did some splitting today: made a nice station to make the heat a little more bearable.. had a fan set up behind me in the garage. Used many of the ideas I’ve picked up here this past week. ... # Backwoods Savage , Midwinter .... u will see what I mean.....
Yup. I see what you mean. Looks like a fairly new splitter and it is set up the right way too! A pickeroon too! You are on the right track Road-side Oak
Yup just picked the splitter up this past winter and she has been garage kept (so far).. almost forgot to give T.Jeff Veal a shout out as well on some of those splitter set up ideas as well. Used some wood spacers to slide the big rounds on.
