What kind of oak is this in the video. I milled a few planks out of it and think it's red oak but not positive.
Red oak bark isn't that furrowed. Hard to say 100%, but I'm pretty confident that is black oak based on the bark. I'd need a leave to say for sure. Black oak wood is nearly indistinguishable from red oak.
I know it's not white oak but it's hard to tell really. I was hoping you guys could nail it for me. From the pictures I just found online I believe it's scarlet oak.
If it has pointy leaves then it is black oak. If they are rounded I'd (be surprised and) have to think on it some more.
Possibly, but chestnut oak has more horizontal furrowing, IIRC. Almost like rectangular blocks of bark...this is all pretty vertical.
Do you have a shot of the leaves or the upper part of the trunk? With really big trees like that the bark low on the trunk tends to look different from a typical tree of the same species. In other works, I can't identify the tree because it is big and old and the bark looks similar on large trees of many species. I don't think it could be Scarlet Oak. That tree would be one of the largest Scarlet Oaks in the world, I think.
mdavlee, where are you located? The Audubon Guide is showing 1-2.5', same as they have for Red, Black, Pin etc. Of course, we know they can get much bigger. Leaf descriptions are different between Black and Scarlet. Based on that bark, I'd say Black, but you're right about the bark at the base of large trees; I look farther up the trunk usually to try for a bark ID. Heck, I may have more Oak species here than I know....I sure see a lot of different-looking Oak leaves...
The tree is in the point of Va. It was part of 5 growing off an old growth stump. The other video of the 550 shows the limbs better maybe.

Big tree! Are you going to slab it? I don't believe it's Scarlet oak based on the bark. Near the base of of scarlet oaks, they swell a wider and develop a bobulous(not my word) bark that appears to be like large round marbles near the base of the trunk. It's actually one of the oaks that I find easier to spot based on a widening trunk at the base and the bark turning into small balls at the bottom 6 feet or so. Need pics of the leaves. .
I'll try to get more pictures later of leaves and such. It's the slabs I cut 3" thick the other day. The piece I bucked out is where I got those big slabs.
