Trying to post a couple vids. IOS makes things difficult Trying out the splitter hoist concoction on some smaller chunks. Fairly certain before I get to the big stuff I’m gonna ditch the four way wedge. Seems to be more hassle than it’s worth with big rounds. First vid is on slow winch speed. Second is high speed. Keep in mind I normally wouldnt have a camera in my hand and would be controlling this process. Throw in a few pics
Definitely prefer the high speed setting better. I might take a nap on the slow speed. As long as you can control the rounds, you're golden.
Haha slow speed may not be as slow as it appears. I’m using a wireless remote and clicking it on and off trying to get it to skid instead of fly at the splitter. With bigger rounds it may be just right. High speed is actually a rope retrieval mode. Quite certain if I asked Polaris they would say absolutely NOT!!! Jury’s still out on this thing. I did get some nice size half’s up there later without any back strain. That’s nice. Originally used the winch on the trailer for this purpose. May retry that. The wireless remote seemed like a great option. Problem is it shuts itself off when not in use. So while your splitting up a round it shuts down. Gotta hold the power on button for 10-15 seconds to fire it back up. That’s when I go to sleep. Time will tell. Not for everyone. If your happy swinging a sledge and quartering up big ones that still may be the best route.
Had a feeling someone might mention that option. Not surprised it was you backwoods That’s just not an option for me. My spine will just not allow it. There’s just too much bending or sitting. I’m not good at either. Tried it a few times, just can’t do it. Even reconsidered it when toying with the winch idea. Problem I see is if you go vertical you’ll want to stay vertical like you do. Especially if you have a winch setup. Otherwise converting back and forth would be a big time loser. Winch would probably be much easier to use vertical but I can’t stay in that position to finish up.
I like your thinking outside of the box but I would think it would be quicker to just noodle than go through all the steps to make that happen.
It’s really not that slow once you put down the camera Couple whacks on the log dog with a hammer and it’s time to push the button. High speed is pretty fast especially if your rounds are not near the splitter. I intentionally parked the splitter a distance from the rounds. Wanted to see what effect it had pulling from a distance. Tip over maybe? How much side force it can handle. Once I get into my log stacks everything will be pretty close. Done a lot of noodling in the past. Trying to cut down on it. That’s wood I worked for that I won’t get back
It’s a log dog or rafting dog depending on who’s selling it. I originally tried using my tongs as it seemed easier. But that leaves you with a set of tongs swinging around in front of your face. Tongs have sharp points. Didn’t care for that. Saw a video here of campinspector using a winch and log dog on his splitter in the vertical position. Bought a couple and tried it. Never tried the tongs again. Now instead of using my hatcharoon I just hit with a 3 lb hammer. Couple good whacks and it’s in. It also acts as a safety device. It’ll keep the large round secured as I’m splitting it as far as at least not dropping off on my foot. Can use it to rehoist the round if wanted getting it up and off the splitter to work on the other half. Still in my face but no sharp points. Last split just line it up and split it out of the log. Easy breezy. Finally saw that ash today. Good score. I’m full but you should grab some. 5/8" Hammerhead Rafting Dog
Well today I tried the full rounds. Too funny. Pulled a round about ten feet over to the splitter. Alls good. Now I’m bent over watching the round on the ground and watching the rope on my pulley rig. Strange,,,,, I’m winching in bit the round isn’t going up. Rope is moving on the pulleys. Winch is making noise like it’s working, round isn’t moving. Look up and the pipe is bending right over LOL damm. Back to the welder. Not sure if it was jammed under the splitter somehow or that pipe is just softer than I thought they were. First pic is as straight as I could get it by winching off a tree and pulling it back. Could have done a nice refab job. Thought about doing a nice refab job. Heck with it. Scab some freebie metal onto it and try again. Working now. I do need something besides those hard rubber boat bumper thingamajigs for pulley wheels. Rope has cut through one already. That I half expected and hoped wouldn’t happen. Shape is perfect just need harder material. Besides that I’m happy with it.
